My large dogs live to be very old, (20 is not uncommon) but they are not typical of most large breeds. Sadly to say, the bigger the heart, the shorter the life...sigh
However, today we are blessed with premium kibbles with much better nutrition than we have had available in the past, so all dogs do have a chance of a longer and healthier life..

If you like big dogs, it is unfortunately true. A great Dane will live in good shape for about seven years, a German Shepard around nine. Small dogs like terriers can live as long as cats! (In good health for about 15 years!) There are exceptions. I knew of a German Shepard that was almost 12 years old, but the dog did not look very good. Most of the bigger dogs get bad hips later on in life, or have spine trouble.
I have nothing against small dogs, but I get along much better with the big pups that can tackle you when you play with them. It's a sad thing, but again, true. Mostly you end up having to put the big ones down when they can no longer get around. Nothing is worse than seeing your buddy lay on the floor and wag his tail, and not be able to get up with out yelping in pain.

The information I obtained at my vets office is this, a dog from 75-100 pounds will live on the average 10-11 years, 50-75lbs. 11-12 years, 25-50 lbs. 12-13 years etc..... The oldest and littlest dog known to live up to 20 years and oldest one on record is the chihuahua the one on record lived to 22 years of age. So generally smaller live longer, but the ol Heinz 57 variety tend to live longer then a pure bred dog also. Hope this helps.

Generally yeah
i had to do research on dogs and it's proven that smaller dogs live way more than big dogs like grayhounds Etc.. it's because it's less work the body has to do..compared to a bigger much more energetic body.. the body has to do more...but smaller dogs have a much better change of getting runned over i think cause my small Beagle almost got runned over like 10 times and my big German Shepard ran in the streetz and never near a car...

Yes, my aunt had a chihuahua named poncho who lived 17 years! You have to ask yourself though how the dog's quality of life is after a certain point. If the dog can't even feed itself, then that's a problem. Larger dogs have more to them (obviously) and with all that bulk, that just means more things that could potentially go wrong.

Smaller canines tend to stay longer than extra desirable breeds... with some exceptions, yet it relatively is the prevalent style. to your occasion, a Chi's existence span is upwards of 15 years, on an identical time as Labradors time-honored between 10-13.

The other day, the Vet told me that my toy breed, Pug, would live longer than a larger breed dog. She said 14 to 16 years. I am so happy about that!

smaller dogs outlive older dogs because of the fact that bigger dogs are more capable of getting sick easier and joints tend to get arthritis.
