To disable active-x control go to Tools->Internet Options->Security tab and click custom level. Scroll down until you see Run Active-X and Plugins then click disable. Click OK, Apply and then OK again. Close and reopen your browser and see if it solves your problem if it doesn't just reverse the process and enable.

Yes, you can turn ActiveX off.
If you are using IE, just go up to Tools>Internet Options>Security>Internet>Choose Custom Level
From there you will be able to disable ActiveX.
