I'm about to buy the D80 (felt great in the store) after being advised on answers to spend the money on lenses than the body. A friend is a Canon user and recommended the following range - what would be the equivalent or recommended Nikon lenses you suggest?
He has the: 10-22mm EFS, the 24-70mm f2.8L, and the 70-200 IS F2.8L.

My main need is a good portrait lens but I travel a lot so I need more than that. I saw some comments on the 18-200 VR as well...I'm a bit confused so if anyone has some sage advice please dole it over. I'm loving Search answers, thanks Yahoo!

The Nikon equivalents are the 12-24 ($920), either the 17-55 f/2.8 ($1200) or the 28-70 f/2.8 ($1400), and the 70-200 f/2.8 ($1600).
For the standard zoom I prefer and use the 17-55. I find this range much more useful for walk around purposes. That's because after the 1.5 focal length multiplier, 28-70 doesn't provide much wide angle coverage: 28mm x 1.5 focal length multiplier = 42mm.
By the way, Canon also introduced a great 17-55 f/2.8 ($1050), but it's not an L lens - it doesn't have the build quality.
With the Nikon 17-55 (built like a tank), I personally find it hard to justify spending $900 on a 12-24 and the gap between 55mm and 70mm isn't missed. If portrait photography is important to you, consider replacing the 12-24 zoom with a Nikon 85mm f/1.4.
And finally, the 18-200 is a great travel lens. It has a list price $750, but you'll be lucky to find it for $900 due to short supply. For the convenience of this all-in-one solution, you do sacrifice image quality, build quality, and (a very usable) f/2.8 however. It wouldn't be for me, but they're selling like hot cakes.
What ever you decide, best wishes with your new gear!

Nikon has the 17-55mm F/2.8 ($1400),
70-200mm F/2.8 VR ($1800)
and the 12-24mm F/4 ($1000).

Aso for the 18-200mm VR its a good travel lens. But it is only F/3.5-5.6 so it is a bit slow. I is no match to the above lenses though.

Check out the Nikkor Lens section on the Nikonians Forum. The f2.8 lens you decide to get will depend mostly on what type of shooting you'll do. I have a D200 and the following slower lenses - 50mm 1.8, 18-70mm 4.5, 18-200mm 4.5 VR and I get great results. The 18-200mm is on the camera 90% of the time.
Here is a link to the lens section on Nikonians ... http://www.nikonians.org/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=list&forum=DCForumID6&conf=DCConfID3 Enjoy your D80 and welcome to the club.

If I had to suggest ONE lens, it would be the 18-200 VR. This lens pretty much lives on my D200 and I swap it over only for special circumstances.

Go to see what Ken Rockwell has to say about this and other Nikon lenses.

I see he has added a page called "Drop Test" accessible from this link, down on the page a bit. It's hilarious and everyone should go read it.
