It is eating up a lot of my cpu resources, i checked the "sharing" under system preferences and made sure that windows sharing wasn't checked. I don't know where to look or what it does or if it will cause system unstability if disabled.

Windows Manager, the file that is activated by windowserver, is the main core of the graphic interface. It shows stuff in the monitor. Most computers would need a lot less CPU resources without graphics but I'm sure you wouldn't be happy.

If you have some way to stop its process, you will find yourself logged out and have to login again. If you take more drastic steps, such as removing the alias out of System/Library/CoreServices or removing the actual file from System/Library/Frameworks/ ApplicationServices.framework/ Frameworks/ CoreGraphics.framework/ Resources, then you will probably get a kernel panic or even an Apple logo with a slash across it. I'm not sure which result is correct but maybe you can experiment and find out. Just kidding.

Windows server may be for the GUI (graphical user interface) on the system (the boxes for programs are called windows, it has nothing to do with Microsoft Windows). It will use a lot of resources (it displays all of the graphics on the system), but the system needs it.
