The most basic mess kit was the C-ration, and it was the 1940's equivalent of todays MRE. It would have a main entree, usually meat, high fat, high calorie (you would be amazed at how much your body burns in the field during stress and combat situations), some sort of fruit in a can. Usually crackers, with cheese, jam, or peanut butter. A little pack of gum, a small pack of toilet paper and a few other toiletries, and, at the time, a small pack of cigarettes (2-3 in the pack), and a book of matches. Not much as changed in 60 years. Except we don't have the smokes anymore.

The C-rations would have been distributed to the individuals on a company level (hence, C-ration).

The K (kitchen)-Rations would have been given to a field kitchen. it would come in large cases, and would have everything you would need to feed a company of men (about 150 people). This would have had all of the entree and sides, desserts, breads and drink mixes needed to serve a complete meal. Each battalion would have one field kitchen (to serve nearly 1000 men), and would have gone through 18-25 cases per day, depending on the conditions.

Both of these were high calorie meals. As I stated earlier, your body burns a lot in extreme weather conditions, high stress and combat. (I was in an aviation unit and never saw combat, but I went through A LOT of combat training), and while the surgeon general recommends 2000-3000 calories per day, during these situations, you are eating 2000-3000 calories PER MEAL! And trust me, you will need all of it.

I participated in a two week field excercise and lived on nothing but MRE's, we didn't do all that much while we were there, just simulating working out of a remote airfield, and I lost 8 pounds. The meals that I were eating were similar to what WWII soldiers and Marines would have eaten in the field, just made with new forms of cardboard flavoring.
