TYLENOL RUINS THE LIVER

2006-12-02 16:01:39 · answer #1 · answered by debbie2243 7 · 0 1

A Tylenol Overdose is based on weight and the total amount taken and time period when they first took tylenol. There is a Nomogram that hospitals use (depending on tylenol level in blood) to either treat or not treat the person. If the amount exceeds a certain number then it is considered toxic and the person needs to be taken to the emergency department for treatment. Tylenol Overdoses can kill but there are other factrors that come into play, how long the person took the pills, over what time period (all at once or over a number of hours) does the person have any underlying illnesses and has the persoin taken any other pills.
If the person gets to the ER and once the tylenol level in the blood is determined they will start treatment right away. Many people recover from Tylenol Overdoses but will require some Psychological assessment.
Sorry this is so long but there are many factors that come into play when dealing with Tylenol Overdoses. These factors will detrermine if the person survives or not.
Hope you friend does well.

No. It would take 14- 20 extra strength Tylenol tablets (500mg) to cause liver damage in a healthy adult. The recommended max dose in 24 hours is 4000mg. I think you will be just fine. You do have to be careful with Tylenol though because it causes irreversible liver damage, so be careful in the future to only take the normal dose.

Debbie is thinking about Ibuprofen- not Tylenol. The dose hospitals give is 650-1000mg. And the lady that said it is toxic to the kidneys is wrong. It is toxic to the liver.

That is double the usual dose of extra strength Tylenol. It probably won't kill a person, but Tylenol has cause some seriously bad liver problems. Best bet is to call poison control, tell them how much Tylenol was taken over what period of time and let the experts advise you what you need to do. Here is a link to find the poison control near you. http://www.mdadvice.com/resources/poisons/

Good luck!

Excessive doses of anything can and do kill, either straight away or slowly by destroying the liver, as this is usually 500mg per tablet and adult dosage is usually take 2 with a glass of water I dont think it will but if you are in that much pain see a Dr asap.

Call a nurse because tylenol can cause kidney damage if taken in large doses.

umm it depends on the type u took i know 8 hour is 650 each so anything over 1200 would b toxic and i think 2000mg is to much for any type of tylenol go to a hospital to b safe

If all 2000 mg's were taken at the same time, I would call the ER and ask them.

Yeah, this is the place to ask, not poison control who you should have already called.
