Beau - I hate to burst your bubble, but I already got me a big ol' stack of presents sitting under my tree. See, that's the good thing about being an atheists we don't have to take the good (presents) with the bad (the preaching). We can just take the gifts!

As you can see simply by the spelling[!!], if you took 'Christ' out of Christmas, you'd simply have a regular weekly, "mass", not a holiday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What you have forgotten is that Jesus' birth WAS the first Christmas, in that it was God's way of introducing the giving of presents to Mankind in the first place!
We simply copy Him, by doing the next best thing ... seeing that we can't offer our sons to Mankind as a sacrifice for men.

The real and original Father Christmas was God above.

When Jesus was born the angels appeared to shepherds in the field by night, and sadi to them:
"For unto you is born this day a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord
... Glory to God in the Highest, and on earth, peace, goodwill toward men."
This was God's present to us all - including you, My Friend.

The Giving and receiving of presents that you benefit by, is simply our way of responding to that example set before us.

YOU SUBMITTED THIS QUESTION, SO I ASSUME YOU CAN READ.
CHRISTMAS HAS THE WORD CHRIST IN IT AND THEREFORE HAS TO DO WITH CHRIST.

CHRISTMAS DAY IS A DAY THAT CHRISTIANS HAVE CHOSEN TO CELEBRATE AND REFLECT ON THE BIRTH OF JESUS CHRIST.

ITS SAD THAT ALOT OF PEOPLE HAVE CHOSEN THIS TIME ENTIRELY FOR MAKING MONEY,SHOPPING AND EVERYTHING MATERIALISTIC.

IT'S A TIME FOR PRAYER,THANKING GOD AND GOODWILL.

ALOT OF PEOPLE HAVE CHOSEN TO USE THIS DAY FOR PURPOSES THAT ARE ENTIRELY UNCHRISTIAN ITS A PITY!
I THINK THEY SHOULD ALL CHOOSE ANOTHER DAY IN THE YEAR TO DO THIS AND NOT BE SO DISRESPECTING OF CHRISTIAN TRADITIONS AND HOLIDAYS.

FROM YOUR QUESTION I CAN TELL YOU LIVE IN A WESTERNIZED SOCIETY WHERE MATERIAL WEALTH RANKS ABOVE EVERYTHING ELSE YOU ARE MOST LIKELY NOT EVEN CHRISTIAN AS APPARENT FROM THE IGNORANCE ABOUT WHAT CHRISTMAS IS.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THOSE WHO CANT AFFORD TO BUY PRESENTS FOR OTHERS?
THEY ARE STRESSED BEYOND BELIEF!
THAT ISN'T THE PURPOSE OF CHRISTMAS

THE TRADITION OF SANTA CLAUSE COMES FROM THE DEEDS OF ST.NICHOLAS (A REAL PERSON) WHO LOVED TO GIVE PRESENTS SECRETLY

CHRISTIANS IN NON WESTERNIZED COUNTRIES AND SOME IN WESTERNIZED COUNTRIES STILL RESPECT THE TRADITION OF CHRISTMAS AND ANTICIPATE MIDNIGHT MASS AND PRAYER OVER MATERIAL STUFF

I've been thinking that that is the whole idea behind Santa. Santa seems to be the kind of Pagan (and by that I mean not christian, jewish or muslim) symbol for the season of giving. Think about it. Isn't Santa stictly the personification of the spirit of giving? Isn't it the 'spirit of giving' that makes it's way down our chimney each year?

We could always call it Festivus, like Seinfeld suggested. Festivus for the rest of us!

Peace!

I will pray for you and maybe you will lean the true meaning of Christmas.

I have a better idea. Start your own club with your own holidays, and quit trying to rain on the parade. The efforts some go to try and offend are as predictable as they are futile. Unimaginative at best. I do find it intersting however that your personal search for signifigance revolves around trying to extinquish others search for signifigance.
