try weighing an object whose weight you know. like a 5lb. bag of sugar. or 10lb dumbells. at home scales are usually acurate within 3%, meaning if you weigh 150#, the scale should say somewhere between 145-155lbs. this range of error can be a lot bigger than you would think!

Since the scale measures large weights, then you'll want to check it's accuracy by weighing something on it that you know weighs at least 20 pounds. So if you have any twenty pound weights......
Don't weigh bags of food because they can lose weight from leakage and evaporation and such.

Basically you have to weigh yourself on a scale that you know is accurate such as one at the doctor's office and then compare the results

you mean food portion scale or weight scale?
For the later, take something that you buy that is heavy that has the weight on it and put it on the scale to check the reading .. i.e. a 50 lb bag of dog food should read 50lbs., etc.
