Oh, good LORD, no. Cool-Whip is a heavily sweetened imitation of whipped cream, suitable for ladling on top of cakes and desserts.
It would be ghastly in scalloped potatoes.
Sour cream would be far, far better in scalloped potatoes than Cool-Whip. Potatoes and sour cream are a classic in many cultures, from the simple US baked potato to the Eastern European latke (a savoury potato pancake). In fact, sour cream and a really good white Irish cheddar would make a wonderful scalloped potato dish -- possibly with chives and crumbled bacon.
Your best bet is simply to go to the nearest grocery store and look for whipping cream (we call it that in the US too.) And while you're at it, see if they have Yukon Gold variety potatoes -- they have a pale yellowish color, have thin yellowish skins, and a creamy and light texture that makes them an excellent choice for scalloped potatoes. If the Martha Stewart recipe doesn't work out, I'll send you our Julia Child version (which sounds much the same -- butter the pan, add thinly sliced potatoes, cover them halfway with cream and top with grated cheese, right?)

Cool whip won't work in that. Half and Half is good, and whipping cream and heavy cream are the same thing. So if u know where to get whipping cream just use that. Sometimes u can use sour cream as a sub. it wouldn't really hurt the scalloped potatoes...

If you are making scalloped potatoes you do NOT want to use Cool Whip as it is sweetened. The heavy cream that is in the recipe is liquid and not sweet. You could substitute undiluted evaporated milk for the heavy cream instead. it is also possible that regular whole milk could be used, even though the sauce would not be quite as rich.

Cool whip will not work in potatoes. Heavy whipping cream should be in the dairy case by the milk. Sour cream does work in a lot of potato recipes, but not sure about the one you have.

No you need heavy crem - it's in the grocery store by the milk.
Remember those little milk cartons you used to get in school, it looks just like that and it's a "liquid" not an already whipped product.
It's often used when making desserts. For best results, chill your metal bowl & beaters well in the freezer before whipping and it will whip up better - it will take a while for the product to "whip" so don't get too impatient. :) And you are using an electric mixer :) This is assuming she wants you to whip it before incorporating into the other ingredients - but sometimes that's not necessary. If you are doing potatoes, then sometimes people substiute "half & half."

OK In the first place Wal-Mart carries heavy cream. Look in the fresh milk cooler. It will be in a paper carton. Please don't use cool whip in your scallop potatoes, it will not cook your potatoes and it will melt down into a sticky mess, if you can't find heavy cream you can use evaporated milk- it comes in a can here in the US or you can use half and half.

No, you need heavy cream. It is back by the milk and comes in little containers . There really is no substitute. it is the same thing as whipping cream.

I don't think Cool Whip is going to work. It's not even a dairy product. No offence to the Walmart employees but I don't think I'd ever take any of their advice. I'm sure any cream that is made from dairy would do.

you can use evaporated milk or half and half and if all else fails use regular milk but never sour cream unless you're using a ranch mix that will compliment the sour cream but cool whip is never appropriate.
