I like what the Jewish philosopher Martin Buber said,"The atheist staring from his attic window is often nearer to God than the believer caught up in his own false image of God."

The operative word here is CHRISTIAN sinner, which means this person has a relationship with God and has been forgiven of their sins through faith in Jesus Christ and repentance. The Bible says, "there is NONE righteous, no not ONE". (Romans 3:10)
So the answer should be obvious; a Christian sinner; for there ARE no righteous people; just self-righteous people.

Friend - All Christians are sinners and some of us are a little too self-righteous as well...at times I almost hate to say I am a Christian anymore. As if I must go underground to keep from being persecuted by all sides. So I do not know if its better or worse to be one or the other. I was under the mistaken belief that we are just humans. GBY

By definition, each is what you say. Christians believe in sin, atheists do not. On the other hand, your framing of the question might be offensive to an atheist because righteousness is not a part of their belief system.
Had you simply asked, "Is it better to be a Christian or an atheist?" the answer is simple and empirical. "By their works you shall know them."
One of the most recent works is a new video game called "Left Behind". It is a game based on the movies of the same name and contains content of such vile bigotry that on the higher levels of the game it is righteous to kill those who do not convert.
Wow, this smacks of the Inquisition all over again where intelligent people are prosecuted by dumb bigots.

A Christian sinner.

"Righteous Atheist" is an oxymoron.

Romans 3:10
As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:

To be a christian sinner implies that you have accepted God as your savior. That being the case then I would have to say being a Christian sinner would be better. We are all sinners whether we are Christians or atheist. Being a Christian doesn't mean you quit sinning it means you quit sinning on purpose. When you become one of God's children you want to do you best to please Him & therfore you no longer want to sin but human nature and satan makes it so we do. To me the term righteous atheist is a oxymoron does anyone else think so.

There is no one righteous, no not one! Declares the Lord. (Rom 3:19)

All sin and fall short of God's glory (Rom 3:23).

Christians aren't perfect, just forgiven! The only way to become righteous in God's eyes to believe in Jesus Christ. Righteousness is a gift of God and it's required for entry into heaven.

I am a Christian sinner, as are all Christians.
I'm really glad that Jesus dies for our sins because if I'm right, we are forgiven and going on home after we are done here.
We all mess up!
If I'm wrong, I won't know it, I'll just be dead.
I wouldn't want to be athiest, only to find out in the end I was wrong... YIKES!!
