I'm in Iraq right now. My MOS is21b Combat Engineer. We go on the routes to find the IEDs and then we secure the area until EOD gets there. They blow up the IED then leave. Its pretty safe for EOD. Here they have escorts, until they arrive on the scene then we pull security. I don't know much about 74d. if you have any more questions e-mail me at chewy3288@yahoo.com

If I had to pick, I would choose EOD because as an NBC guy, you will never actually do your job. You will get to run the NBC room of a unit which means you get to clean about 100 masks every month, or watch people clean them, and take care of all the other NBC junk that you will never actually use. Plus you have to use a mask in a real NBC environment to pass your AIT. That's something I'm just not willing to ever do.

EOD is a straight ticket to Iraq, but since you are joining the military now, it doesn't matter much anyways. You will spend all day long picking up mortar rounds and such, but at least you will do your job. A lot of the guys that I've seen who stayed EOD their whole careers tended to not have all their fingers... something to think about.

89D is basically bomb disposal. Your job would consists of disabling explosive devides to include IED's (Improvised Explosive Devices), UXO's(Unexploded Ordanance (such as bombs that didn't go off) and tings like that. There are two parts of the school. The first part is at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama where you will learn basic electronics (so you can figure out circuitry in modern explosives) and things like that. Then you will go to Eggland Air Force Base to learn more about MIssiles and Munitions. The class is very hard and has a high failure rate. The Army is in drastic need of EOD specialists due to the war in Iraq (I.E. IED's). If you believe you possess the aptitude to succeed in this MOS, I would reccommend it. It also carries a hefty bonus if you should choose it. Just keep in mind that this is a high risk job and the training is very hard. 74D is basically the NBC person. You will be in charge of maintain all nuclear, biological, and chemical protective equipment. To include masks, suits, detectors, alarms, and things to that nature. I wouldn't really reccommend this job. For more info about this job go here... http://www.goarmy.com/JobDetail.do?id=40

Here it is:

EOD will put you on the streets of Baghdad playing with bombs.

NBC will get you stuck either in the Orderly room pushing paperwork or screwing around with gas masks. We never had a job for our chemical guys so they got to fill in on all the crap nobody else would do.

Point being: EOD= quick promotions but scared shitless in Iraq.

NBC= boring with little chance of promotion, it is a **** job.

EOD would be more dangerous, unless in the event of a chemical attack.

I have a friend whose spouse in AF EOD. He lost his leg in the sandbox, but successfully petitioned to stay Active duty and is now teaching other EOD wannabes.

Basically, you need to be slightly insane to be EOD...But apparently it works.
