My black lab is only 4 months. When we took her out of her kennel this morning there was blood in the kennel. We examined her and did n't find any sores or cuts. We assume that she's going into heat. But I think that 4 months is too young for her to go into heats. We are planning on getting her spayed but were waiting until she was 6 months. Could she really be going into heats already or could she possibly have some kind of infection? Please help!

While four months IS a bit early, it is absolutely not unheard of or impossible. I know of a five-month-old pup giving birth, meaning she had come in at three months (with her littermate brother being the sire of the pups...The owner never thought a pup that young could come in).

Take a tissue and wipe yiour dog's vulva and see if this is where the blood is coming from. If she is in season, there will be discharge on the tissue. It's possible the blood came from a new tooth or from biting her tongue or from some other minor injury you didn't see.

If she is in season, you can still spay at six months like you planned...the only difference being that for the next three to four weeks you will have to watch your girl like a hawk to be sure no intact male gets near her!

Yes, it happens. You should be able to see the vulva a little bigger and see some discharge. You can buy a little diaper for her to wear until it is over, in about 3 weeks.
You'll just have to wait until the heat is over and get her spayed. Until then, do not leave her unattended outside and be aware that she may have a few more accidents than you would expect.

I would have her checked by a vet, 4 months seems young for a dog to go into heat.

4 months is quite young. My lab is 6 months now and she's beginning. Will probably take her to be spayed next month.

it is possible she is in heat. you can always have the vet check her out to make sure everything is okay. definately get her fixed to avoid any pontential problems.
