I have naturally dark brown hair and would like to get my hair close to that. It is lighter in some areas from past highlights. What is a good hair color for dark brown hair that won't come out looking flat or boring?
Any helpful tips or suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

Use a semipermanent tint such as L'Oreal Color Spa or Clairol Natural Instincts. They don't contain as much peroxide as the permanent tints, and the darker colors last a good long while.

Don't go with the very darkest brown tints; they tend to put too much tint at the ends and after a few uses you end up with black ends. Stick to the warm browns and auburns.

I wouldn't recommend dye from the box... I did that, wrecked what was left of my natural color and hilights, and had mousy-looking flat dark brown that ended up looking almost black!

Go to a pro and you won't regret it. They have dyes that do shimmer and look good. Probably what would make your hair look best is get an all-over rich brown and SUBTLE hilights no more than a shade or so lighter.

At-home dye BAD BAD BAD idea.

But.... if you decide to do it one word of advice--if you want dark brown go with a medium brown because it always turns out darker. Warm colors will look less flat. But be warned, home color looks nasty most of the time!

I started using L'OREAL Natural Match. I use the 4W Dark Golden Brown. For me it covers what grays I have, it lasts real well & it gives my hair dimention. I like it...

Go for something with red in it. Reddish browns won't look as "muddy" and drab.

you could dye your hair auburn without bleaching it so it will be dark but it has a red flare.
