Although airline rules vary slightly the general rules it this:

If you have a credit (or an unused ticket) for a flight that was cancelled the airline will permit you to use that value towards the purchase of a new ticket, on the same airline for course, within one year of the issue date of the ticket or voucher. If you received a voucher on April 16 2006 for a cancelled flight on American, you would have to book your new American flight by April 15 2007.

The new ticket can be anywhere the airline flies, but if the price of the new ticket is more than you credits the airline will ask you to pay the difference.

Heres how it works.

Call the airline,
Give the Confirmation Number.
See how much Credit you have
Make another reservation someplace
The reservationist's software will calculate the difference in the airfare and then most of the time when you ask for the cheapest tickets, they come with rules and change fees.

PS. They can look it up by other ways if you do not have your confirmation number.

You usually have to either call the airline directly or be a member of their miles benefit system.
