I wear yellow gold but I'm allergic to fake earrings. One piercing started to swell and closed but the other was fine. I'm sure now I'm allergic to fake jewelry so when I got that ear re-pierced I opted to get it pierced with a 14 kt. white gold stud, I also put the other one in my whole that hadn't closed. I left them in and cleaned and twisted to new hole and when I took them out (not trying to be nasty just giving a good description) there was pus in both of my holes and something blue on the back of the earrings. When I wiped them clean the silvery color was gone and there was like a light copper color on them. When I replaced them with the 14 kt. gold studs my ears have been fine ever since. Am I allergic to white gold or was there something wrong with the earrings? I got them pierced in an established chain: Claire's the same ear closed when my brother got his done with white gold at a different place with white gold but the other ears fine now with the original earring.

White gold is usually coated in either nickel or rhodium to give it that silvery shine - or both - chances are that's what happened. The cleaning removed the silvery agents and your allergen. Rhodium is porous, as is nickel, so they came off, revealing the true gold and removing your allergen.

Although nickel was traditionally used in white gold, it can cause skin reactions. Now white gold is commonly made with other white metals. Some people (about 12.5%)[citation needed] are sensitive or allergic to white gold. This occurs because of reaction to nickel found in some white gold alloys. Reactions are mild and only involve skin rashes.

You need to take out all the earings and and keep your ears wash and cleaned. put in the orginial earrings and every day put that ear wash on to help clear up the problem.

yes you can be allergic to gold not gold but some metal that they add to make it less than pure 24k gold.
