I have a really sweet little dog that I adopted from the pound . I have had him three years and he is still so scared. I try to snuggle him and be really sweet to him but I am an extremley hipper person and I am always leaping and jumping through my house but my dog gets so scared. He immediatly cowls to the floor. He has never been abuse in my care and he was only 8 month old when I got him. He is a poodle/lab/ cockerspaniel. He is really peppy when we are running in the yard and playing but the second some one brings out a broom to sweep or I start jumping around he turns into an ex abused animal. Is ther anything I can do to help him realize I would never hurt him. Or is this how he is going to be.

Just want to clear a few things up.

In response to KAB's answer, the worst thing you can do is feel sorry for it or console it when it is acting skittish or coweling. This only reinforces the behavior and teaches it to continue to be scared as you are rewarding it for having that anxiety feeling.

The best thing you can do is actually confront the dog with the things that scare it. For instance, if the dog is scared of brooms then make it eat next to a broom for a few days. then play with the broom while holding the dog there with a leash until the dog finally goes into a normal state of mind.

Good luck, it will take a while but keep it up

If he is skittish when you are very active and hyper around him, then the only thing you can do is teach yourself to be calm around him. This may or may have anything to do with his past and whether or not he was abused. If he hasn't settled in to accept this after three years, you need to accept that he finds it scary and nerve wracking when you are very energetic around him. Just like some people value peace and quiet, some dogs simply prefer when things are calm, and it either scares them or just rattles their nerves when there is a lot of hyper activity.

He is already "programmed" and will always cower and be fearful at the same things.

A puppy is most impressionable up to the age of 3-4 months.

You will just have to reassure him everytime he is scared, but he will always be like that.

Thank you for adopting from the pound
