According to the Quaran- men are ordered to "beat your wives if they disobey you".

And if children reach a certain age and they do not pray their 5 times a day, their parents are also ordered to beat them to teach them.

And if a woman has sex outside marriage, then a family member must kill her.

And the prophet Mohammad also said that music is sinful and should not be listened to. How can music be SINFUL?

I thought Islam was about peace? none of this sounds peaceful to me. Why would God keep ordering the beating of women and children? Also note: I have NOTHING against Islam, I am just curious if this is true and if it is, what Muslims have to say about it.

If I'm wrong in any of this, please correct me. Much love-

These quotations from the Koran may help you understand them better, ma'am.

Men are superior to women (surah 2:228).

Women have half the rights of men: in court witness (surah 2:282) and in inheritance
(surah 4:11).

A man may punish his wife by beating her (surah 4:34).

A wife is a sex object for her husband (surah 2:223).

A man may marry up to four wives at the same time (surah 4:3). [Interestingly, you might note that there's no mention of the womans' rights.]

Sura 8.12 "Remember thy lord has inspired the angels with the message. Give firmness to the believers and instill terror into the hearts of the unbelievers. Smite them above their necks and smite the fingertips of them."

Sura 9.5 "When the sacred months have passed, kill the idolaters whereever you find them."

Sura 47.4 "When you encounter the unbelievers, Strike off their heads. Untill you have made a wide slaughter among them tie up the remaining captives."

A Muslim must not take a Jew or a Christian for a friend (surah 5:51).

A Muslim apostate must be killed (surah 9:12).[An apostate is a Muslim who wants to opt out of Islam.]

Merry Christmas.

I am not very knowledgeable but here it goes, first of it's a light beating. With the wife it is not disobeying the guy, it's themselves. If a religious wife started drinking heavily and would stop, then started taking drugs and was sleeping around and was getting worse. Would you do nothing? She took an extreme, if you love here you would do anything halal(legal in religion) to help her. With the kids it's the same, prayer is the backbone of religion. I think it's age 10 though. It starts with separating the bed from the child(make him sleep on the floor) and continues into beatings. I got beat by my parents, guess what ,light beating aren't bad. It's the drunken rage type people automatically think of. The sex for a woman is bad because family is sacred in Islam, it is what holds society. If the family is broken, then the society crumbles. I think the husband has a choice if she dies or not. But I could be wrong, also the family members do not kill her themselves. Music is sinful, check first source. Islam is about peace, and balance in life. But you can't be peaceful to everyone. A murderer should be held in prison or some form of justice.

■ Wife Beating: By taking a verse out of context and relying on it's translation rather than the Qur'an itself opens the door of misconception. Whether wife beating is allowed or not, described in the following link:

■ Children Beating: "Beat them to teach them" doesn't it sound ridiculous? Islam doesn't teach to beat someone to teach something. It is ordered that parents should teach their children how to pray, and encourage them in such a way that they pray that regularly from their will and get used to it. If they reach a certain age, and don't pray, they have to be given proper understanding about it. If, still, they don't take it seriously, it would be clear that they are not careful. In such situation, they need to be rebuked. Reaching at this point, generally, most children would pray regularly. However, there are some exception, then light beating is recommended, such that no mark is shown on the skin. Also, a parent can't slap on the face.

■ You are referring to stoning to death. This punishment is only for those who are married adulterer and adulteress. But this offense must be proven either through a confession made voluntarily by the accused or by the testimony of four witnesses who state under oath that they have witnessed the commission of the crime. It's only after this legal procedure that the accused will be punished by lapidation.

Punishment is for evil doers, not for peace lovers. Punishment is prescribed to discourage sins, evil works and crimes, thus to set peace. Adultery is a terrible sin. If is was taken lightly, then it would spread like flood waves. Take a look at Western countries,

1. Around 40% of the marriages see a divorce.

2. Sex before marriage is widespread. I talked to all of my American friends and co-workers, they all agreed on one thing, "It is near impossible to find someone here (US) who didn't have sex before marriage." I hope you know this is a great sin in any religion.

Islam wants to stop it in the first place. Islam doesn't want to punish people, rather Islam wants to stop such sinful acts in the beginning. Also, a true Muslim would never perform adultery.

■ Is Music sinful: Well, I don't think Islam forbids music. Islam forbids those music which encourage and romanticize lust, sensuality, obscenity and greed. Music or songs with noble and pure messages and themes that ennoble the soul and spirit is permissible.

The Quaran is not the only source of stuff like that. The Old Testament also mentions for women to be stoned to death if they are caught in the act of adultery. It also states that a man can have "an eye for an eye". Go look it up, the Qaran is not alone on this. And of course not all Muslims take these words literally.

Do you see Jew's and Christians acting out stonings and revenge tactics? No, you dont. Dont take it so literally.

This is early teachings. Like much of the early writings of the bible you have to take things with a bit of historical understanding. Most of these things were normal practice at one time, like stoning a woman for adultry. Some of this however, is still practiced in a very convoluted interpretation of the Koran.

Islam hates Woman? Is there no rights for Woman in Islam?
Woman enjoys certain privileges of which man is deprived. She is exempt from some religious duties, i.e., prayers and fasting, in her regular periods and at times of confinement. She is exempt from all financial liabilities. As a mother, she enjoys more recognition and higher honor in the sight of God (31:14-15;46:15). The Prophet acknowledged this honor when he declared that Paradise is under the feet of the mothers. She is entitled to three-fourths of the son's love and kindness with one-fourth left for their father. As a wife she is entitled to demand of her prospective husband a suitable dowry that will be her own. She is entitled to complete provision and total maintenance by the husband. She does not have to work or share with her husband the family expenses. She is free to retain, after marriage, whatever she possessed before it, and the husband has no right whatsoever to any of her belongings. As a daughter or sister she is entitled to security and provision by the father and
brother respectively. That is her privilege. If she wishes to work or be self-supporting and participate in handling the family responsibilities, she is quite free to do so, provided her integrity and honor are safeguarded.

First let me state I am not muslim, nor am I an authority on Islam. Also, I do not encourage violence against others. However, what is right is merely a question of perspective and up-bringing, and environment.

Speaking from a purely logical standpoint, it's peaceful because women and children are second, third, fourth, whatever class citizens and don't matter in such a religion.

Also, there are parts of the Bible many Christians don't follow. Like, oh, I don't know. Don't kill. Oh, and the other one, where they're supposed to go out and kill nonbelievers.

That might be one.

I am not of that religion - just letting you know.
Koran is how you spell it I think.
My OPINION is that the BASIS of their rules are to enforce the moral ideals that they are going for
EX:
enforcing prayer
enforcing fidelity
keeping the lustful explicit music away
Keep in mind that this book of their religion was written in a country and in a time where these practices for punishment were NOT uncommon for trivial matters!
I am pretty sure they don't kill wives for infidelity anymore or beat their children.
Take it in context, you might want to look it up online a little more if you are seriously curious to see how they enforce these rules now?

"If the husband senses that feelings of disobedience and rebelliousness are rising against him in his wife, he should try his best to rectify her attitude by kind words, gentle persuasion, and reasoning with her. If this is not helpful, he should sleep apart from her, trying to awaken her agreeable feminine nature so that serenity may be restored, and she may respond to him in a harmonious fashion. If this approach fails, it is permissible for him to beat her lightly with his hands, avoiding her face and other sensitive parts. In no case should he resort to using a stick or any other instrument that might cause pain and injury.Rather, this 'beating' should be of the kind which the Prophet (peace be on him) once, when angry with his servant, mentioned to him, saying, 'If it were not for the fear of retaliation on the Day of Resurrection, I would have beaten you with this miswak (tooth-cleaning stick)' [as reported by Ibn Majah and by Ibn Hibban, in his Sahih].
