The wall paper is in very good condition, but it is old, and we removed it from our bedroom, and it was a horrible job. We would like like to know if it is ok to paint over it with a good oil based paint?

I'm reeling at someone having emulsioned their room six years ago and it still looks good! I tend to decorate far too often. You said the wall paper is in good condition - yes go for it, if you are ok with the pattern (if its embossed) that is on it.

Surely a water based emulsion would be a better choice?

Try a small patch first to see if the paint is going to "take" all right.

Wallpaper's a drag!! I have painted over wallpaper loads of times.

You might need to put a primer coat on before you paint it. The walpaper in my utility room was red and white and it was painted over with white paint and they put a primer coat on 1st. It looks good. This was 6 yrs. ago.

Never, you are compounding instead of eliminating.... Eventually, you will need to remove BOTH the paint and the wallpaper...

As long as you use a primer first I don't think there would be a problem.
