Performance. If it behaves badly without a reason, that is a sign. By itself, distortion or unwanted noise is not a good indicator. The original signal could be bad. Verify that the signal is good before jumping to the conclusion that the stereo is bad. Also, check for loose or bad wires. If a wire going to a speaker is bad, you might think the stereo is bad. What about antenna connections? Stereos are pretty cheap today. If you cannot check the stereo yourself, consider whether the cost of paying someone to check it is more or less than replacement cost.

You will hear a crackling noise when you turn it up past half way or if they are cracked and worn out looking.
