I recently found out I cant have children. My husband and I want children very badly. I found a girl, didnt really "find" her but shes like a friend of a friend, who is pregnant and is definetly not capable of raising a baby. She has always said if got pregnant, she would give it up for adoption. While I do not condone her irresponsible life, I do feel like maybe this is the answer to our prayers. She has already agreed to allow us to adopt her baby and I know we will be going through a lawyer because we want to do everything right and protect the interest of everyone involved. My husband and I are not wealthy but were not poor either, we're both hard working people who do not receive any kind of federal assistance. I was wondering if we could still be eligible for WIC as long as we follow the normal guidelines (income etc.)??

To the few incredibly rude and stupid people who answered this question without paying attn to the entire story, you should reread it. We do NOT receive public assistance in any way. We have not asked for it or anything. We are not looking for a handout and we are certainly not adopting a child for a paycheck. We are not poor but were not "well off" either. We pay all of our own bills and make our car payments on our own. No help from anyone else. And as far as not adopting a child we couldnt afford, it would be a far larger burden on the govt if this girl kept her child and lived on welfare and the rest of the govt package for the rest of her life.

To the people that think WIC equals poor is wrong. Have you ever priced baby formula?? Not having the option to breastfeed limits you to expensive formulas. That's why there are guidelines...to decide who can get assistance and who can't.
To answer the question, when you legally adopt a child, it's the same as giving birth in the eyes of the government. The child is yours. If you meet the requirements, then you will get it.
Thank God for people like you who are willing to give a place in your heart and your home and for the young lady that is smart enough to realize she's not ready for a baby. Blessings to you all...

Probably not - if you follow the rules and are able to adopt the baby through the legal system then chances are you are too well off to get hand outs from the govt (they won't let a couple legally adopt if they can't provide for the child). You could get a stipend of some sort if you took the child into your house as a ward of the state but then you wouldn't be the parents you'd be the foster parents.

Adopting a child isn't a free paycheck.

You could be eligable for WIC if you meet the income requirements. Good Luck and Congratulations! Adoption is a great way to have children!

WIC benefits are based on income and number of family members in your household, they don't take into account how you acquired the family members! Check with your local office to find out what the salary requirements are for a family of 3.

Obviously if you have to live on public assitance you are not financially capable of adopting a child. This girl who has agreed for you to adopt her child needs to find parents who can and WILL be financially able to do so without public assitance.
