The worms were slender, and about 1/2 centimeter long. They were crawling on him in his fur and they were all over his blanket.

Are you sure they are worms? It could be fleas. Fleas crawl and they also hop. The flea feces looks like a small slender worm and can appear to move as you ruffle the cat's fur.

I would start with a good flea treatment, like Frontline Plus. You apply it to the cat's skin, at the back of its neck, just at the bottom of the skull. If it is fleas, you will see them begin to fall off and die within minutes.

This stuff is great and it will also kill any fleas, flea eggs and flea larva in your house, provided you keep the cat in the house. If you put the cat out, then the Frontline can't work in your house. Well, I guess that's a no brainer, but you would be surprised at how many people treat the cat and then banish it outdoors and come back here to post about fleas in their house, even though the cat is gone.

Edit: if it is fleas, you really need to consult a vet. Cats get tapeworm from fleas and there is no over the counter treatment for tapeworm. Tapeworms are one of very few things that cats can communicate to people. A Frontline Plus treatment and a vet visit and things should be back to normal at your house.

Flea powder will get ride of the worms on the outside body and on the bedding.
get some wormer for the inside of the body just for good measure. save some worms for the vet to see what they are.

Are you sure they were black worms? Where were/are they located? Are there any open wounds on the cat? Do you have a photo? Email me if you'd like.
