in answer to SO above...
doesn't that mean we should all keep giving? if a dollar from me or you means so much more to us, then doesn't it follow that it's more meaningful for that dollar to be given to charity than to have someone super-wealthy give it? personally, if someone who has nothing gives $1 to charity, it says a lot about that person...equally as much as the person who has billions and gives nothing to charity.

I think that would be a really good idea, at this point i seen it was 36181 answers ($36181) so if yahoo and everyone who answered the questions voted on what to do with the money a lot of people out there could be having a nice christmas this year!
Merry Christmas alll!!
I have to add a little to my answer after reading some of the other answers which i thought were really stuiped, Oprah has a lot of money yes and why doesn't she give it to charitys etc... But here is the thing Oprah wasn't the one to post the question about money etc... I find it funny people use the excuse of not giving to charity because their are people out there with more money, and the thing is even if you give a $1 it can make a difference yes it might only be $36000.00 dollars but to a few people out there who have nothing it is a lot more, from a hot meal to a roof over their head So insted of bitching about the rich not giving, why not take a stand and help someone else out who has a lot less then we do? I am a single mum of one and i don't have a lot of money but i always find a extra few dollars to give to my local charitys even if it is a $1in silver coins, i know i can make a difference!!!
It's also a really good leason for my son who now finds a few extra dollars left over from his christmas shopping to also lend a hand (I am so proud of him)

That would be really awesome!
I can't believe some of the answers to this question! The purpose of charity is giving without getting a pat on the back!
I'm not rich but I try to do my part in paying it forward, just the ideal of paying it forward is awesome!
There were a couple of Christmas' that I couldn't afford to get my kids ANYTHING, so the Salvation Army gave me presents to give my kids, so I try to donate to them every year now that I can afford to give. No, i can't give $1,000 to them, but every little bit helps!
I know that without the help of the Salvation Army my kids would have gotten nothing and I just want to say Thank You to them!!

The point is not to throw money at problems, but to find great ideas. Great ideas need little money, but a lot of passion to seek the accomplishment of the goal of the idea. Just look at the government's response to Hurricane Katrina. They have more money than Oprah, but the lack of any proactive planning and zero reactive planning lead to squandering millions of dollars and more problems than solutions.

lol! Yeah that's cute and all, but no thanks. I can barely support myself without throwing away money on people pretending that they would actually give their money up for charity. I got a better idea, why doesn't Oprah just give away some of her fortune?

That amount would not even be a fraction of the wealth that Oprah has. Why not let her donate from her enormous fortune. Her giving 36,000 would be like me giving a dime.
