I recently toured the USS Midway aircraft carrier in San Diego, CA.
It's huge. And yes, it's like a city - sort of. It has everything you mentioned, but plenty of the spaces are pretty cramped (by this civilian's standards). Stairways are more like near-vertical ladders. Many of the ceilings are short enough to touch without stretching. There's plenty of places you could accidently bonk your head if you're not paying attention. Also the doors that separate the compartments of the ship are off the floor by a few inches, so you have to step over them or you'll trip into the next room.
And then just for fun there's a lot of explosives, liquid oxygen and jet fuel in different locations of the ship. One time a civilian ship collided with the USS Midway and two sailors were killed - which was lucky, 'cause it was close to the liquid oxygen and could have sunk the ship.
Even if a member of the military never fires a shot or even sees a bad guy, they're taking real risks for our protection.

yes, Carriers are floating cities. Basketball nets set up in the hanger, Full service Post Office, mini mart, even a more than adequate medical facility..much like one of those walk in clinics where you would go instead of an Emergency Room.
In point of fact.. every ship in the Fleet has the basics.. post office, store, gym equipment.. it's just that the larger ones tend to have better facilites.

All the US Navy's aircraft carriers are cities in themselves. Remember each one is populated with over 5000 navy personnel.

I would prefer livening in the country. Aircraft carriers are more like living in a building designed to house 1200 people. There are over 5000. Armpit to armpit. It is about as crowded as a can of sardines and some of the sardines smell like sardines. It was not one of my more enjoyable experiences.

Aircraft carriers are like floating cities...so much so that I've believe they have their own zip codes.

ONLY the carriers are like that...The reason is because there is room on the carriers...The other warships are not that extensive.

In Navy jargon, AC sailors (both brown shoe and black shoe) are in the gedunk navy.
