you take this involuntary deep breath that is sort of raspy (the same heaving breath deep in your stomach that you have when you are crying really hard ). Does anyone know what causes this? Or has this happened to you? Just wondering.

I always refer to it as the breath that signifies the end of your crying session.

since beathing involves involuntary muscle and voluntary(when you consciously adjust the rate of your breathing)there is also muscle movement involved in crying-fast erratic muscle movements and that last breath-usually right at the end of a crying jag is actually these muscles esp lung muscles and the others(thorax etc)involved in breathing and crying relaxing-theres also a psychological effect of relaxation like- its over involved in it.

Crying or weeping: The third category, generally referred to as crying or weeping, is increased lacrimation due to strong emotional stress, depression or physical pain. This practice is not restricted to negative emotions; many people have been known to cry when extremely happy or when they are laughing. In humans, emotional tears can be accompanied by reddening of the face and sobbing — cough-like, convulsive breathing, sometimes involving spasms of the whole upper body. Tears brought about by emotions have a different chemical make up than those for lubrication. Hope this helps.

I've had crying episodes a lot lately due to some unfortunate things going on so yes I hear ya.
Not every time, but sometimes I do take that deep breath later . . but usually it's before I've moved past whatever I'm crying over . . in other words its like I'm still thinking about it and mentally my brain is trying to make me strong again and get past it.
Did you ever have anyone tell you to take a deep breath, and it's shaky? Deep breaths are relaxing. I like to think that that last deep shaky breath is clearing myself to be strong and move on.
I might not know the medical reason, but maybe that helps.

Yeah, I usually do it after there I cry super hard, or am super upset. It is kind of a deep breath then it goes in and out. Kudos on the question. I would like to know this too. Have a great day and I hope you get tons of answers!

it`s because when you`re crying or laughing really hard you`re breathing out a lot more than you are breathing in. to make up for that your body forces you to take in a deep breath. that`s why when a baby is crying they take huge breaths inbetween. it doesn`t necessarily happen at the end either. when you laugh really hard don`t you feel like you`re out of breath ?

Yes, that is normal and has happened to me and anyone I've seen crying. I think it is because when you are crying your heart starts beating fast and your blood level goes up and after a while after crying you start calming down and relaxing then your breathing changes and goes slower and skips a breath. That's my opinion.

deprivation of oxygen. Your body will adjust after the drain of crying (and laughing hard for that matter).
