I adopted a new kitten today. When I adopted him the woman at the shelter told me that he will need to have food out 24/7 or he may become hyperglycemic. Is this true? I feed my other two cats and dog twice daily.

A kitten does need to eat more than twice a day. Depending on its age it could need four little meals, three, before it is ready to have just the two a day.

Kittens do very well on canned meat. Max kitten is a pretty good choice. I would feed the older cats and dog their meal as usual and then open a can of meat for the kitten and let him eat it. When you open a can of cat food always take it out and put it in a Pyrex dish. Give 1/4 of the can to the kitten for four meals or 1/3 for three meals and eventually 1/2 (when you get to the two meals a day) If he wants some of the dry food the other cats have left (never the dog food) let him eat it.

You get hypoglycemic when there is not enough food in your system. You get hyperglycemic when there is too much sugar or carbohyrate in your system. Same with animals. So little kitten boy needs to have food in there on a regular basis. He will also sleep better at night on the meat diet because all dry cat foods have too much carbohydrate. Don't use cheap canned meat like Whiskas or Friskies or Fancy Feast. Those can really cause tummy upsets or diarrhea. If you can't find the Max kitten use Wellness or Natural Balance. I order Nature's Organic and Nature's Logic from petfooddirect.com for my cats. Those are good high quality meats without articial flavorings and fillers. I always add at least a tsp of filtered water to them for added moisture.

Cats should be fed canned food twice a day, not a large amount, about 1/3 to 1/2 can per feeding, depending on the size can you use. Dry food should be down and available at all times. Cats don't overeat. They get underexercised when we have them as pets. A kitten needs all the food it can eat to develop normally and stay healthy. He will stay nicely in shape if you take the time to play with him and provide him with toys he can use alone.

You can double check this with any vet.

Kittens eat numerous times a day, a little at a time. In fact, that's what all cats prefer to do. I have 3 grown cats. I leave their food bowl and water out all day, and I replenish it twice daily.

The kitten as most cats will eat small amounts several times a day. three or four times a day shouldnt be a problem untill he gets a little older then twice a day should be fine

you should ask your vet, perhaps because the kitten is so young, it may be the reason it needs to have more food, I have had kittens/cats for many many years and have always left the food out for them it has never been a problem accept for when I had a dog who developed a taste for cat food LOL

i keep food out all the time for my 7 cats and 3 dogs. its so much easier then to worry about feeding them a few times a day. your other cats can ajuts to the all day feeding juts do it slowly day by dayso they dont get out of control and get sick by eating all the food.
