A neurotransmitter is one of many chemicals that modify or result in the transmission of nerve impulses between synapses. A synapse is the space, the gap between one nerve cell and another. There are excitatory neurotransmitters and inhibitory neurotransmitters. Some examples of neurotransmitters are acetylcholine, gamma-aminobutyric acid and norepinephrine.
