I have my first orthodontic appointment at 3:15 later in the week, but through strange circumstances, there is also a very important sports meet that same day at about 3:30. I probably can miss a little bit of that meet, but if my first appointment is merely to see if I need braces or not, how long will that last? Also, what else would happen during that appointment?

It will last more than 15 minutes. Just walk in early like at 2:30 they can't say anything. Well they take X-Rays and print them out, kinda time consuming. They take this mold of your mouth with your mouth full of stuff that looks like play dough (chocolate flavor is recommanded by me. Then you go through what kind of braces you want and all that finachial stuff.

JUST TO MAKE A JUDGMENT TO SEE WHETHER OR NOT YOU NEED THEM WILL NOT TAKE VERY LONG. TO HAVE THE APPOINTMENT TO HAVE THE BRACES INITIALLY PLACED WILL TAKE ABOUT 1 HOUR.
