Why aren't you asking your doctor this question? I'm not being critical, I just don't understand. I used to work as a R.N. on psych. units for many years and am now depressed and on 2 antidepressants.
When I became depressed to the point that I realised that I needed help, I went to see my Family Practice M.D. He tried me on several antidepressants. When the first one didn't help enough, he kept trying different ones until we found one that was effective for me.
When I became physically handicapped, my depression got worse and I started having urges to kill myself. When this started, my M.D. referred me to a psychiatrist who tried me on different combinations of 2 antidepressants that, together, are the most effective for me.
Isn't your doctor doing the same thing for you? It sounds like you are complaining to your doctors that you are still feeling depressed and anxious and they don't want to increase the dose of your meds or try new ones. Is that the case?
It is true that you won't experience the maximum effect of an antidepressant until you have been on the dose for a month or 2. If you haven't been on your present dose of the antidepressant for at least a month, then I could understand why your M.D. would be reluctant to increase that dose.
Most tranquilizers are addicting if you are on too high of a dose for too long a period of time. I can understand why a M.D. would be reluctant to raise that dose. There is an anti anxiety medication, buspirone, that is very effective, is not a tranquilizer, and is not addicting. You might suggest that to your doctor.
I would suggest counseling if you can find a good one. There is a reason that you became depressed with anxiety (That's my diagnosis also). A good psychologist can help you determine what that is and help you to remedy that so that you eventually can get off of your medications.
To me, if you have no physical illnesses, are not on the maximum doses of 2 antidepressants, and on buspirone (Buspar), and are still having significant symptoms of depression; I would get a 2nd opinion from another psychiatrist. If your doctor is not a psychiatrist, I would get one. They are the experts at medications for your problems.
About herb supplements to help with depression and anxiety, I'm afraid that there are none that are potent enough to help you. Their manufacturers make claims, and people who sell them make claims, but there is a lot of "hype" in the supplement business.
If you stop and think about it, if any were significantly helpful with depression or anxiety, some big pharmicutical company would buy the patent and make a zillion dollars. In addition, it is a myth that "natural" supplements have no side effects. Any substance that has any effect on the body/mind has the possibility of side effects. By the way, I tried SAM-e and it didn't do a thing.
You got some good suggestions in the answers you got before mine (except the SAM-e). One was that you if you are on medications, you should never take any over the counter medication or supplement unless you ask your doctor and he/she says it is OK.
God bless you in the process of becoming well again. I hope that something I have shared with you has helped.

DON'T TAKE HERBAL MEDS WITH PRESCRIPTION ANTIDEPRESSANTS.... You hear people say that all the time...and it's true...it will make you feel FAR WORSE...if you mix the two...
It takes about 4 weeks for you to feel the full effect of the antidepressant. It took me about 6 weeks before I got the full effect from my antidepressant.
It's possible that the antianxiety medication may not be working for you....It takes a little while to find the right drug combination for someone, because not everyone responds to the same things....
Have you thought about psychotherapy? A support group? Counseling? At least until the right combination of meds starts working for you....
Best wishes.

talk to a naturopath. I'm in the same situation. The naturopath has given me healthier supplements that are taken in addition to the antidepressant and has really helped remove the depression and anxiety within a few days. (if its a nutritional issue this does work).
SAM-e is a natural antidepressant that apparently has no side effects. Some antidepressants can cause depressions

If you feel you need them then you prob. Do. Ive always strugled with depression. Most of my family members have depression. Ive been on those meds since I was 17 im 27 now. They have saved my life. You could see a general family Dr. or a physocoligist. Either Dr can help you. Just be honest with them on your feelings and thoughts. These drs are trained to know if you need meds or not and if you have depression & anxiety. They will prob try a few deffrent types until they find the right medication for you. Ive tryed several diffrent kinds but my Dr found what works best for me. In the kinds ive tryed I havent had to many side effects. When you talk about loopy I think ur reffering to more of a medication like the antiphysotics. But think of it this way. It cant hurt to go to a Dr and get advice or have a consult. From there you can decide whats best for you.

Looks like you need a medication change. Not every antidepressant works the same on everyone.

one thing that will help you is to avoid caffine it can icrease anxiety even though you take a tranqulizer. take it from some one who has/is going thru the same thing. the other thihg can be to ask your md about a change in meds rather than an increase in dosage
