They are probably just excited about a feed being prepared. As you say, they may be hungry and they are probably just vocalising their excitement at getting food. Maybe making sure you know they are there, they don't want to be missed out or anything.

I usually prepare this way, believe me its very tasty...
cook rice partially, cut vegetables of your choice, grind chopped onion, mint leaves, tomato, corinder leaves, ginger, green chilles, small piece of cinnamon, cumin seeds,1/4th spoon of roasted poppy seeds with water to make a masala paste. In a big kadai or cooker pan heat oil and ghee (50/50). Fry the chopped vegetables along with bay leaf, when it is half cooked insert the masala paste. stir fry till vegetables are cooked and then mix rice.

The simplest way is to chop up the vegetables of your choice, in a slanting way. Steam them and stir fry and keep aside. Cook rice (prefarably Basmati - the long grains) partially.
Take a wide Kadai or a handi and spread a little butter or ghee and splutter a few cumin (jeera seeds) and generous amount of cashews. Lay the rice and spread the stir fried veggies, another layer of rice and veggies and so on.
Pour another ladle full of ghee or butter on top and keep the dish covered on low fire for 5 minutes.
Turn off the fire and it is ready for serving.
For a variation keep the vegetable color wise separately and lay them in between the rice colour wise.

well im not that expierienced in cakes (just know the old christmas pud and stuff), but i think i can help you with other christmas foods. i live in spain, and here there is a veeery nice thing called turrón, which is this kind of tablet (like a chocolate one) which is very sweet and has almonds in it. its white, for more information, google it. also in spain, we have what is called a "Roscón de Reyes". It's for the Spanish celebration of the Three Kings, and it's like a round croissanty thing with a hole in the middle (its shaped like a ring) and it has sugar and thin almonds on top. Also, it's tradition to have a "sorpresa" hidden inside the roscón, which tends to be a small figurine. whoever finds the sorpresa has to buy the roscón de reyes next year. sorry i can't think of anymore right now, but good luck!!
