Dye is really hard to keep in my hair as well. I have blond hair so it falls out very fast. However, when I have my hair done at the salon I maintain my color much longer.
I think it's normal for hair color to fade. Especially the initial color after you first dye it (even at a salon).
Please try the salon!!! Your color will not only look better but it will last longer, I have done both. Also, most salons will give you a free consultation. Make an appointment then hear what the colorist has to say about your hair.

You didnt mention which color. Are you trying to go red? Red pigments are too large for the hair to pick up and end up falling out much quicker than any other color. Aside from washing with cool water only every other day and using color protective shampoos, conditioners, treatments, and styling products, theres not much you can do.

If you are not going red, are you leaving the product in long enough? Also remember that everything that touches your hair from shampoo to hairspray should be formulated for color treated hair, and use cool water only.

go to someone who knows what they are doing! You didn't say what color you were trying to be but if it's a shade of red-join the club. Red is the largest dye molecule and is very hard to penetrate and stay in the cuticle...I also don't know what condition your hair is in...you may just want to go to a salon-if not for color just go for a trim and a conditioning treatment and talk to them about color

If you have damaged hair maybe you need a protein filler so the dye can absorb. Or else you may just need a proffesional strength hair dye, you can get any color you want at a Sallys beauty supply store.

My co-worker got her hair dyed brown, and then went back the next day for red streaks. The red came out after two washings. Why? well... I don't know exactly, sorry
