It's possible that English isn't their first language, people tend to dream in the first language that they spoke.

Really? Cool! Who did that, what language do they normally speak, and what did they speak while sleeping? Was it intelligible? Usually sleep talking sounds like mumbling and gets jumbled up, so that's ever more fascinating to me. Do tell! It will help me give a better answer maybe.

I have woken myself up by speaking German during a dream I was having. A person may speak English, another language, or a bunch of gibberish during REM sleep.

I'm not really sure but i asked one of my friends if she dreams or thinks in spanish since that's her 1st language and she said yes.so maybe when the person is speaking in a different language when their sleep maybe its their 1st language or 2nd language if they are bilingual

If they're bilingual they may do this. I've heard of people who dream in their native language, so I would think it would work the same way. Often people who talk in their sleep, are respomnding to things happening in their dreams.
