White Shepherds are disqualified from being shown in the conformation ring with the AKC because of color. The white of a shepherd only masked the true color of the dog, it does not do anything else to the dog. You can have a white that is genetically a sable, or is genetically a colored dog. White Shepherds can be shown in UKC registered as a German Shepherd or a White Shepherd. There is nothing wrong with the white on a Shepherd, it does not affect working ability. A white should have strong pigment and dark eyes.

I would imagine the reason they dont recognize white german shepards is abuot the same reason they didnt use to recognize white boxers.
It used to be said that a white boxer was from being inbred, and people pften said they tend to have more behaviorable problems than a fawn or brindle. Now, the AKC recognizes white boxers.
The AKC only recognizes pure bred dogs, and with white being so recessive in these breeds, the likliness of one being pure bred is very slim. But it can happen, which is what lead the AKC to recognize white boxers.
I'm sure over time, they'll recognize a white german shepard as pure bred as well.

Only because they haven't recognized the coloring yet. They still consider it to be an "unacceptable color" in the breed. I believe some day they will at least accept the color as a variety of the breed. I think they are beautiful dogs!

I guess this could be their reasoning:

White supposedly adversely affects a dog's working abilities. A white dog blends in with sheep or goats, lessening its visibility and herding effectiveness. Also, a white coat stands out against a grassy or brushy hillside, making the dog an easy target for prey animals.
