Could 666 be DCLXVI?
Standing for:
Domitanus Caeser Legatos Xti Violenter Interfecit.
Translated from the Latin:

Domition Caeser is violently killing the envoys of Christ?
Making it a contempory warning of dangers to the early Christains and not a prophesy as is commonly believed today?

Revelation was written in Koine Greek (I have it in Koine Greek). Most scholars, as I do myself, would consider it a "glimmer of hope" for Christians being persecuted by the Roman Empire, as you suggest, and not a prophecy of the future. 666 is usually taken as being Nero Caesar, as "Nero Caesar" in Hebrew numerology adds up to 666 and fits in with it.

Revelation is nothing more than a fairystory some idiot decided to use as a threat against his followers. it wasn't even put into the bible until after the protestants split from the Church.

I read that once, it's in a chapter on numerology from a book I own called "The Black Arts" by Richard Cavendish.
