I have a 2002 Ford Ranger Edge with a 3.0 V6 with a 4 speed auto A/T and the transmission in going out. Would it be cheaper for me to buy a remanufactured transmission and install it myself or would it be cheaper for me to have a repair shop rebuild it?

joka629 brought up the ideal of buying a low milelage transmission form a salvage yard. I actually gave that alot of thought, but then I started to worry about not knowing how many miles it had on it and weather or not the real tailshaft was bent from a front end collision.

a good salvage yard will warranty the purchase. as far as tailshaft being bent if you take the trans out of park and insert the proper drive shaft yoke and it spins freely in the tailsaft bushing then you will very most probably be fine inspect for this and any visible case cracks or mount hole distortions before you leave the salvage yard.

Definatly if you are able to do the install yourself, you should do it. Be sure that you can do it before you start though, because the time, effort, and cost you'll end up paying if you don't, will not make it worth it in the end. You don't even have to buy a rebuilt tranny, you could go with a low milelage tranny from a junkyard. Hope this helps a little bit!

Because of the age of your vehicle the most economical route would be a re man from a reputable supplier. The real question would be do you have the tools to do the job or at least have access the the equipment you would need. The main cost you will en cure is the labor whichever choice you make

i own a repair shop, and the difference in cost here is real close as far as dollars go,,i think id want the one i had rebuilt ,you never know what the other transmission was like before it was rebuilt,,if it had been real hot it wont hold up good, and if you know your that well it might be a better idea to have it repaired,,at least you know this one, i have seen cases where a transmission couldn't be rebuilt because of internal damage, but some builders will build them anyway and take a chance on them,id just stay with the one i had ,and build it,,good luck i hope this help,s.

If you know what you are doing then it might be cheaper to do it your self. But if you arent sure of what you are doing you could end up spending more than you would have sending out to a shop

check fluid pressure first. cooler in radiator gets plugged easy. check by bypassing cooler with rubber line and clamps. drive 2-3 miles, better? bypass it with auxillary cooler,$40-$50 at auto zone.
