I don't think you could change one's life with $1000 but you could give someone a lucky break or make their life a little easier.
As far as what I wouldn't do...I sure wouldn't give it away in haste. I would really look at who could use it the most for the best reasons possible whether it would be family, a friend or a complete stranger. I would make sure they used it for good. Maybe a little money for whatever, but the rest to make sure they can get a good start on a new life.

I wouldn't just give it away to a needy individual or have it used to pay someone's bills...... the money should be an INVESTMENT into something that creates a larger payoff in the end.

For instance, educational material for the poor, a class that would help change a person's life (like to get a job or training to get one), medical research, classes in money management for those who are living on a tight budget and about to go under and need help.......... any of those things and a whole lot of other creative ideas.

But don't just give it away! Then it's gone, the end. I'd find something to STRETCH that dollar!

I wouldn't give it to someone who needs it to get real drunk or get high.
I wouldn't give it to a ultra rich kid.
I wouldn't turn $1000 into 10,000 pennies and give it to 10,000 people.
I wouldn't buy someone a pair of designer jeans that cost $1000.
I wouldn't buy $1000 worth of worms and sprinkle them all over the streets of my city.

$1000 would be donated to a village in Somalia. This amount of money could help the whole community, provide fresh water, better crops and education for the WHOLE community.

ah - been watching Oprah? :) I wouldn't just give it to them - I would give them some to spend but basically have them use a majority of it to teach them how NOT to get into the same type of situation again....assuming that you're giving it to a needy family...basically the whole "teach them how to fish" thing....
