NO such thing as a reputable designer dog breeder. If you want a mix just go to your local shelter and adopt why spend hundreds of dollars on a mixed breed.

No reputable breeder will sell "designer" dogs (in other words MUTTS). Anyone who breeds mutts and sells them as special breeds with cutesy names and overinflated prices is not to be trusted.
Edit: Mutts are NOT healthier than purebreds. They have health problems from both purebred parents and when the two parents share a problem (such as breeding Labs and Poodles) will "double up" on the problem increasing the risk many times over.

Designer puppies are not bred by reputable breeders.
Good breeders do not breed mixed or mutts.
All designer puppies that are not an AKC recognized breed are nothing more than overpiced mutts.
Go to any humane society or shelter and get a toy dog from there you will be saving a life and not pay a huge amount of money. You also will not be supporting irresponsible breeding.

There is no such thing as a reputable breeder that breeds mutts. They are all byb's.

No reputable breeder would sell or breed designer dogs. You are asking for what doesn't exist!!!

More importantly, when you DO find a breeder and choose a dog, make sure he's not looking for a more 'designer' owner! lol
(sorry, I couldn't resist)
Seriously though, I have no answer as to California breeders, but don't forget to research the pros and cons of purebred ANYTHINGs - they can be more tightly-wound in many ways.

a reputable breeder would NEVER intentionally breed crosses...

think of it this way.. a reputable breeder is one who takes their dogs to shows to prove they are an excellent example of the breed WORTHY of passing on their genetics... they breed SOLELY for the betterment of the breed

NOBODY with good quality dogs breeds "mutts" because if they had good quality dogs they would be breeding much more valuable purebreds...

NOBODY who wants to remain reputable would disgrace their name by intentionally breeding mutts

Reputable "designer" puppy breeder is an oxymoron.

Try your local animal shelter. Why go to someone who is adding to the animal overpopulation problem when you can go to the pound and save a life?

Edit: Mutts can be just as good of a dog as pures, and in several ways, can be better. My two cents.

How about adopting a SATO from Puerto Rico? Chihuahua mixes are small and these guys are so thankful to have a loving home and so uniquely cute. Check out saveasato.org ;-)
