Put an ad in the paper, and contact local shelters.

For the person above who suggested just keeping it, that is horrible. How would you like it if your pet ran away, and somebody found it but rather than trying to find out who's it was they just kept it?

If you're able to have a cat and no one turns up, it'd be best to keep the little guy. There are already so many stray pets dying everyday.
However, if you absolutely can't have any animals where you live and still no one shows up, consider giving him to a close friend or someone that will take care of him well.
If you take the kitten to the shelter, he might get adopted.
If its an older cat... I'm afraid they're the last to get adopted and usually get put to sleep. :(
If the cat is well groomed and friendly, most likely he has been around humans and has a family.
You can see if they've been spayed or neutered by checking their ears, there should be a little chip or clip of it missing. If its there, it is an outdoor cat.
If you have a humane society around, call and ask if they can see if the cat has a micro chip in him, that will right away find the owner.
Our guys have microchips in them. If they ever get lost, they can be scanned and then we can be contacted. That would probably be your best bet on finding the owner, if there is one.
Hope you find a good home for him, whether its with his usual owner or a new one.

Cats usually stay close to home. Put out food pass out flyers on every corner withing 6 blocks. Get a live small animal trap if you can. Local Shelter may be able to help you with a loan. If its a male look for female in heat if female and shes in heat youll know it lost of boys around. Call you animal shelter and see if someone has turned your kitty in. Check with your local newpaper for found kitties and most will let you place a free lost ad. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Aww so sweet! If you can hold onto the cat for a little while longer, that would probably help. Post those notices on supermarket bulletin boards and other high traffic areas nearby.
If there's a Humane Society near you, you should contact them also... not necessarily to take the cat there right away, but just to let them know. If I lost a pet, I'd probably phone the Humane Society first just to see if someone turned it in to them. Good luck.

PUT NOTICES UP AT ALL THE LOCAL VETS. Whenever one of ours is missing, we contact the vets to see if anyone has posted a flyer. Also, the add in the paper is good. Also, it's probably not too far from home, so some signs on the visible telephone poles would help a lot.

Legally you can not simply keep any cat you find - you must report finding it.. usually to the SPCA or humane society in your area... that way you are covered if somebody tries to accuse you of theft (very rare.. but you never know)
you can check it for a collar and identification, look in its ear for a tattoo
a vet can scan it for a microchip
sometimes people phone the vet if they lost a pet..
its common for people to take their neighbours pet and dump it in another part of the city - or for people who move out to leave cats behind...

you can usually bring lost cats to your local shelter and they try to find the owner

What is the problem? You know that there is a huge chance his owners will never see the flyers or he is a homeless cat from the start.

Put an ad in the lost and found in the newspaper or take it to the local animal shelter. They will try to find the owner.

If you don't want to keep the cat..make sure you take it to a "no kill" shelter. Just in case no one claims it, they won't put it to sleep.
