I have a six-year-old male cat who lived his early life outside (fed by various people) until caught and tamed. He has been very happy and active indoors in my small apartment for the last three months. I feed him Hill's Science Diet and a very occasional Fancy Feast Medley and have never, since I've owned him, had problems with him throwing up his food; neither have I noticed worms. But a few days ago, he lost his appetite and began to throw up food. He seems very fatigued, won't run around or play with his toys, and won't watch squirrels from his window. He just sits around and sleeps with me. I'm very worried and plan to take him to the vet next week but don't understand how he could have contracted an illness when he never goes outside. Could it be something more serious (cancer)? Any thoughts are appreciated.

I think your cat may have stomach problems, or it might have lost its appetite due to some type of illness. It's good that you are getting him to the vet.
As for the sleeping and sitting around, I wouldn't be too concerned. My cat started to do the same when she was his age. I think he'll be his old self once you have him taken to the vet and diagnosed. I don't think it is cancer.

Well, the vet will be able to tell you what is wrong. For now, get him on a bland diet to help with the vomiting. Skip feeding him one meal, then feed him boiled chicken and rice. Start out giving him 1/4 of his normal portion, then 1/2, then 3/4, then his normal amount. This will give him stomach a break.

Science Diet isn't really the best food. It is very expensive for a food so high in fillers. You are better off with a food like Flint River Ranch, or Wellness if you can find it.

Good luck.

Hi there...his health sounds like it may not be able to wait until next week. Consider ringing an ER vet this weekend and discuss this with them to see if an emergency visit is warranted. Cats hide their illnesses sometimes until it may be too late so it's best to err on the safe side. There are just too many variables involved as to why your cat may suddenly have become ill. He could have ingested a toxins, foreign substance, maybe something as simple as his food was contaminated or spoiled, etc. Cats cannot go without food for more than a few days before experiencing hepatic lipidosis http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_hepatic_lipidosis.html

Your cat could have a hairball or if he does not have his vaccinations (shots) then he could have one of several feline illnesses. Call a vet or take him if this conitinues

Yes, it is possible. Did you take him for a check-up when you brought him home? It's possible that he had something then that has only now become visible.

Good luck!
