There are several ways to make a basic grilled cheese sandwich.

Get two slices of the bread of your choice and enough cheese of your choice to cover one slice of bread (there are several cheeses out now made especially for grilling - just read the label).

Now butter both slices of bread and put the cheese between the two pieces of bread and: -

1. Place under the grill in your stove. Have the heat on a low setting so the bread does not burn and so the cheese melts, once the cheese has melted, spread a bit more butter on the outside of the sandwich and serve.
2. Place the sandwich into a floating hinged toaster (with or without buttering the outside first - that is your choice) and wait for the cheese to melt and then brush each side with butter and serve.
3. Get a frying pan and spread some garlic or herb butter on the outside of the sandwich and place it into the frying pan, have the heat on low so the cheese melts and the bread does not burn. watch the sandwich and turn once to brown the other side.

I like to add some chicken, onion salt, pepper and a bit of mayo - the perfect toasted/grilled sanga.

Put butter or cooking spray in a small frying pan. Use enough to cover the pan. A quick spray of Pam should do it. And if you're using butter, one to two teaspoons should be sufficient. Set the burner to medium/low. Once the butter melts or the cooking spray is hot, place one slice of bread in the pan. Immediately top with two or three slices of your favorite cheese. Place another slice of bread on topof that. Brown for a minute. Turn the whole thing over with a spatula. Brown on the other side. Keep flipping it over frequently until the bread is nicely browned and the cheese is oozing out the side a little. Never cook it on high because the bread will burn. To test if the pan is hot enough to put the bread in, run your hand under cold water and then flick your finger into the pan. If the pan sizzles, it's ready for the bread.

Butter 1 side of bread. Put 2 pieces of cheese on the buttered side of the bread. Then, top with another piece of bread that has been buttered on one side. Put the buttered side up (not touching the cheese). In a shallow non-stick frying pan, place about a teaspon of butter in it. Put the bread, dry side down on top of the butter. Cook until this side turns light brown. Then, turn over onto the buttered side of the sandwich and cook until browned or how you like it. This makes a wonderful grilled cheese sandwich. Another way to make a grilled cheese sandwich is to broil it under the broiler. Just put a piece of cheese (or 2) on a piece of bread (don't put a top in it), put it on your broiler pan or a cookie sheet and put it under the broiler until brown or the color you want. This is really good, too. It's just an open-faced grilled cheese sandwich!
