A stable pit bull should never be human aggressive - a dog who does should be humanely euthanized after being vet evaluated and behaviorist evaluated. This is a trait that should never occur. These dogs may, however, show dog or animal aggression as they reach maturity. They are a very tenacious and strong breed of dog that not every single person should own.
Since you've likely got a pit bull or pit bull mix, the best solution to do is to get the dog spayed/neutered as soon as your vet will allow (this helps limit potential problems that are brought on by intact dogs). Make sure the dog is enrolled in obedience classes and managed (always on a leash, well behaved, etc.) while out in public.

No, you`re the one that needs to do homework!! I live in Montgomery county and know a few things you don`t. The owner of the "pitbull" had the dog only a short time and was allowed to run free when McCurry was attacked. The dog was an adult male of unknown origin . I called Montgomery Co. Animal Control and asked how they knew it was a "pitbull" that was involved. " If it looks like a "pitbull" then we label the dog as such." So, you have two people that are dealing with a full grown dog that is free and nothing is known about the dog`s background . See if you can figure out what was wrong with that picture.

Do you want to guess how many times my aunt's poodle-mix has nailed my ankles and my hands?
I used to believe the media hype about pitbulls, but then I saw this adorable brindle pup at a dog show and brought him home with me. Guess what!?! Yep, he's a pit!
I've had my pit several years now, and met several others of the breed, and I can say that they are unfairly and unjustly picked on by uneduacated people. These dogs, like any other dog, are naturally friendly. It's stupid people who don't raise their animals properly, or treat them right, that cause problems.
It is also the media--several times have pits been said to have attacked, only to find out later that it was another breed. The media just use "pitbull" in their headlines, knowing it will draw interest and sell more stories.
If you're a responsible owner who will raise your pup right, then keep him. If your not responsible, then you shouldn't have ANY kind of dog. Do what feels right to you!

No dog is inherently aggressive towards humans. Think about it - humans bred dogs for hundreds of thousands of years to be what they are today so what sense does it make to breed a dog that is aggressive towards humans? No one would be able to handle the dog. There are three reasons a dog could be aggressive:
1) It has a neurological problem (can be helped with meds)
2) bred from parents that had aggression
3) humans made it that way (through abuse, neglect, purposely training it to be aggressive)
Pits are no more aggressive towards humans than other dogs. And yes, there are plenty of news reports of other dogs attacking humans but no one wants to pay attention to those. A search on the internet could show you those reports.
The thing with pits is that the wrong people want them and they train the dog to attack people and other animals. There are the lazy owners too, who do nothing to train their dogs and then they're shocked when the dog acts out. These people are the reason pits have a bad reputation at this moment. And of course the media runs with everything and sensationalizes it. It's a lie that pits have locking jaws. Their bite pressure isn't even as hard as other dogs. And if trained properly they don't just turn on you.
Basically, all dogs are what you make them. If you take the time and effort to properly train and socialize your dog you won't have a problem other than dealing with the reactions ignorant people.

I have owned pitbulls all my life. People say oh its all in how u raise them, that is not true. They were bred to bait bulls after that became illegal they were bred to kill other dogs. You cannot change what they were bred to do its in thier genes. You can be a responsible owner, take them to obedience classes, make sure u spay or nueter this makes them more unlikely to be aggressive. Make sure your dog knows who is the leader of the pack, dont let him get away with not listening to you ever. Make your pittie work for treats dont just hand them over because he is cute. Even well socialized pitbulls should not be trusted alone with other animals. Pitbulls are funny clowns with big smiles they are to smart for thier own good. Dont think your pitbull cannot get over a 9 foot fence either they can........you can tell your aunt that she needs to read up on them the media has made these dogs into monsters, Pitbulls were bred to be human friendly most pitbulls are not good guard dogs they will let the burgular most likely rob your house and try to be all up in the fun. A human aggressive pitbull usually needs to be euthanized, they were probably poorly bred and are a lawsuit waiting to happen.Always remember YOU are IN Charge and your pit needs to know that ..........socialize, obediance classes and spay and neuter you will have a great dog. Take my word and do not brush these three things off. I made the mistake of doing exactly that. I had a stray dog I was trying to get into a foster home. I accidently left my back door open, my pitbull got out attacked the stray I got in the middle and he bit my arm causing one bone to crush to powder the other bone came out my skin. He wasnt neutered obediance trained or neutered. I will never make a mistake like that again in my life. There jaws do not lock that is an old wives tail. They have more pressure in thier jaws than other dogs. good luck

Pitbulls are just like any other dog. If the owner is bad...then they'll be bad. If they're negelected or abuse they are going to be bad behaved dogs. A 2 pound poodle would be dangerous if it was abused and neglected. People have just singled out pitbulls unfairly because some are raised for dog fighting. If the parents were well-behaved then your puppy should be to. Show it lots of love and attention and you'll have a wonderful dog for many, many years.

No way. A dog's personality varies, and no breed is all dangerous. The pitbulls being vicious maneaters is a stupid stereotype and was made up by some ignorant person. If you love your dog, don't get rid of him/her.
"cute" dogs like pomeranians, and golden retrievers have been killed, too. I guess it's because of the way that pitbulls look that give them a bad reputation. But that's all just bull (no pun intended).

It's ALL how the animals are raised. My daughter has two pits,in the house with my two young granddaughters, for years and they are very well behaved dogs. Just like back in the day, years ago, the Doberman Pinschers had a bad reputation and it was said they would turn on their owners. I wonder what the dogs owner did to them since I have had Dobies for 25+ years and never had one turn on me. Just raise the puppy with lots of obedience training and love.If you really want your dog.....Don't sell it.

Statistically, Pit Bulls/Am Staffordshire Terriers are not very high on the breeds /biting list. However, they are number one in killing humans. This is due to their scissor jawing action that no other breed has and one of the strongest sets of jaws of any breed. Bred as dog fighters, human aggression was seen as detrimental to the "sport" so it was bred out. If you neuter your puppy and bring him up with gentle training and socialize him (a puppy class is great for this), he'll be less likely to be a problem dog then the vast majority of dogs of all breeds out there. Just beware that he probably won't like other dogs, especially if they are the same sex as he/she. From my own personal experience as a humane society volunteer, 100% of the Pit Bulls I encountered were friendly. One situation that has really stood out in my memory is a red Pit Bull that I nearly ran over on a country road. I came back to check on him. When I opened the door, he started to climb in but stopped due to my German Shepherd Dog's reaction. I told her (the GSD) to get into her cage and closed it. The Pit then got in, curled up between the seats, and put his head on my thigh as I drove home. From what I have seen, this is typical.
