My new friend (we are 50 ish and new neighbors) her husband has been mentally disabled since head injury eight years ago and he has lots of pain and has tried to remedy with surgery. I am amatuer holistic and wonder if there is any safe comfort I can offer.

You should try to get professional advice from a medical doctor, s/he will have the knowledge and experience to identify and provide for what your friend needs. Don't try holistic "healing", it is not scientifically founded and may cause mixed reactions with other medicine or cause unknown bad effects that your body is not prepared for.

I think that the regular doctor will help you with what herb and things that could work with the medician the doctor

Probably best to refer him to his regular doctor since he has existing health conditions which you cannot aid in aleviating. So kind of you to want to help!
