1. The United States, backed by the most capable navy in the world, and being able to move to a place and over-run it quickly, or slowly- depending on objective, either way, strategically will win the fight regardless....devastating firepower we have shown doesnt even give justice to our full might.
2. Russia, Even though the Russians might someday actually be a full democracy, it remains today elusive as to what really happened to the remaining kremlin....activity goes on now that in ways- can be tied to them.
Militarily, Russia would be unbeatable on their own soil, much as the US or the UK are. The weapon caches they have are/have never been half accounted for.....WMD type anyway.
3. England, The British have seen more fights in her history than any nation on earth. If you check her stats, you'll find that England hasn't really done too bad. The British are just as capable as the US with respect to demographics, and technology.
They have never shied from a fight, either being attacked or attacking. Today they are a formidable force, not to be considered an easy target by any army.
4. China, to be brief- I'll say because the size of their army can only be described really is "too many". Any country would have to be completely off the hook to go for them, on the other hand- anywhere you throw the bombs...you'd be bound to get at least 20 of them or more.
5. India, Hmm...they have nukes and know how they work very well- they have an excellent intelligence community, and not to mention a large and capable army...plus, a navy (though I don't really know how large or small), they would be another very tough fight for really anyone.
This is only my opinion, I could be wrong about these assessments, but its the way I see it.

1. Israel
2. USA
3. UK
4. Switzerland
5. Russia
Israel maintains one of the most highly trained armies in the world and is capable of defeating any of its neighbors in a conventional war.
The USA is clearly a leader and the only nation capable of sending its forces to any location around the world.
Training of the British army includes highly specialized units which compare with the best US units.
Switzerland is a state which is often overlooked by most experts, but they maintain an army capable of self-defense against nearly any conceivable adversary.
The Russian army is huge but spotty. Certain units are excellent with others being mediocre at best. However, its force projection capabilities are improving and its new strategic orientation may pose a problem to other states in coming years.

In terms of an effective force in classic warfare, the US stands alone. No one comes close. Literally if the rest of the world combined forces in open warfare, they would lose. Our technology, the money spent, and the training make the US invincible. In open warfare.
If you're also talking about guerrilla warfare, that's a different story. Clearly a group of 500-1000 insurgents can hold the US army at bay for years.

1. US, hands down.
2. South Korea, almost on par technologically with the US, but outnumbers us by a lot.
3. China. Large army, but their logistical base to support it just plain sucks. Nightmare just to keep it fed and armed.
4. Iran. Again, huge numbers. Almost 20 million "reservists", but of extremely doubtful troop quality.
5. Israel. Some of the most elite troops in the world and as advanced as we are, but vastly outnumbered. There are more soldiers (read: untrained conscripts) in the Iranian army than there are people in Israel.
