Relaxation therapy... or some sort of self-hypnosis can work really well...
I even downloaded a guided imagery mp3 from the net which helps A LOT!
I have terrible insomnia though, and have for years, so medication is a necessity for me and strangely I have found that the cheapest over-the-counter medication actually helps the most (Benadryl).
However, I still need help in addition sometimes and that is where the tapes and Cd's come in handy. It gets your mind working on something else other than what is keeping you awake and helps to relax your muscles and your mind.
There are any number of relaxation tapes and Cd's available and most of them will work. Although I suggest just downloading some to try before you go out and buy anything.
Most of them have you do the same thing though... basically you tense each part of your body in turn (holding for 3-5 seconds then relaxing) starting at your feet working your way up to your head... Is surprisingly effective...
Good luck!

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!
1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.
2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.
The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.
After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net
Ohhh..and Good Luck!

nobody is giving you specifics because they haven't experienced insomnia! try melatonin if you want to take a dietary supplement, but thats going to cost you $25 a month and sometimes it doesn't work, what does is valerian root tea. Go to the herb store and buy a bag of bulk valerian root tea, then buy a stainless steel steel tea ball. Fill the tea ball with valerian root and pour boiling water in a mug, let tea steep for at least 10 minutes and the drink slowly about 20 minutes before bed. valerian has no addictive properties and can be used as much or as little as needed.

Here's a short and direct answer on how to cure insomnia: 1- Get acupuncture, works fantastically 2- See a chinese herbalist, also works great I did these and got results. Many other non-western countries believe insomnia is caused by energy ("qi" in chinese, or "prana" in India for example) blockages in the body. These cause emotional tension and, among other things, insomnia. Acupuncture and herbs really work.

Ever notice how people react after eating turkey?? There's an enzyme in turkey that makes people sleepy. Why not eat a good meal involving turkey and then sitting down to a good football game? Even if you don't sleep all night at least you should get a good nap. Otherwise, cut back on your caffeine intake.

No sugar or caffeine after 4pm. Chamomile tea or warm milk only to drink. Warm bath. Sit in meditation (just breathing deeply and being quiet) for 15 minutes an hour or so before you go to bed. Play Pacobel's Canon in G softly as you start to sleep. Let its spiral carry you slowly down into sleep.

Insomnia (sleeplessness) is due to stress, dietary and medical
problems. By making small lifestyle changes like having a fixed
daily routine, relaxing and eating properly, insomnia can be
cured. I found the information at http://tinyurl.com/jfzpz useful
for getting sleep.

Lay off the energy drinks and caffeine products during the day. Take a nice, warm bath. Put on something warm and soft. Crawl into your bed and snooze.
Also, (and this worked for me, but may not work for you) ice cream made me sleepy. I would have a small bowl of it when I couldn't sleep. Worked everytime.

What about an herbal? Will that fly? Try either Melatonin or valerian.
