I make my baked potato in the microwave and not in my oven so this will of course be for the microwave.

Large potatoe(no bad spots)..cleaned and scrubbed very good with water.

With your fork tines, polk holes in both ends of the potatoe and in 4 or 5 places on both sides and around the potatoe.

Place in the center of your microwave and cook it for about 6-8 minutes, checking after about half the time and turning it over, finish cooking for the remainder of time. Carefully check to see if it is soft yet. Some microwaves will even have Baked Potatoe setting on them and if that be the case, just push that button and when half the time is up turn the potatoe over and continue cooking.

Once the potatoe is done, then you can cut it from one end to the other down the center, you can then put sour cream, salt, pepper, bacon bits, butter, cheese, etc just what ever you like on it.

That is the way I make mine.
PS You can bake more than one at a time in the microwave. If you do, you just have to push that Baked Potatoe button once for every potatoe that you put in there. Put 3 in there, push it 3 times.

Wash, let dry, wrap in a small sheet of foil just enough to cover the whole potato, bake in a 450F oven for 45 min to an hour. Squeeze it at about 45 minutes, and if it has some give and is soft, it's done.

My preferred way is to wash the potato, poke it a couple of times with a fork to break the skin, wrap it in plastic wrap, and put it in the microwave...5 mins at first, then increments of 3 minutes until it feels a bit soft and can be pierced easily.

Baking in the oven takes an hour or so...potato nails are helpful (aluminum "nails" that you stick through the potatos) to help them cook on the inside faster, without getting overdone on the outside.

When done, you can split open or peel, and add your favorite toppings.

Here's one way of doing it without making it.

Get a good sized potato and poke several holes in it. Put it in the microwave for 6-8 minutes on high. (You have to poke the holes otherwise the contents inside may explode or boil over.)

When it's done, carefully remove the potato and wrap it in aluminum foil for 2-5 minutes. Unwrap, add butter, bacon bits, sour cream or chives, and there ya go!

How do I make one...? Well, I PERSONALLY don't bake it. lol! I just wash and clean a potato (regular brown kind you get at the grocery store), cut it in half (not all the way... like they do in restaurants), and pop it into the microwave to heat until it's soft. Then, I immediately add a desired amount of butter into the crevice, close the crevice by holding the potato together (so that the butter is forced to melt quickly), and then add bacon bits... *drools*

Apparently, you can bake it, microwave it, or grill it. Interesting...

Choose a big potato, firm, with smooth skin and no bad spots. Some people poke a few holes in them. This is necessary (or used to be) if you're doing them in a microwave. In a regular oven, I've never had problems with exploding potatoes...

I start by lightly brushing a (clean, of course) potato with olive oil, then sprinkle on spices (go easy- herbs can pack a lot of flavor), according to my current taste. Really good is a basil/oregano mixture or a French mixture including rosmary, marjoran, oregano, basil and thyme. Then BAKE (approx 1hour in oven- till you can easily poke it with a fork). THEN... best part... EAT- If I've herbed the outside, I try to stick to sour cream, a bit of cream cheese, maybe (if I've got it) on the inside.

With a steak, try eating the potato with sour cream and blue cheese.

Also, some Europeans tend to prefer potatoes with mayonnaise and that's tasty. Of course, this is all perfectly FAT FREE... but who's counting?

If you want to use the microwave just do the following: Wash the potato and poke a couple of holes in it. Stick it in the microwave for at least five minutes. After that just keep on putting it in the microwave until you can poke a hole in it easily.

Pierce the skin with a knife or a fork (put in lots of holes), cook in a microwave on high power for 10 mins or so (depends on how big the spuds are and make sure to turn them upside down halfway through) then place in the oven on high power for another 10 mins to make the skin crisp.

First, wash the potato with mild soap and scrub it. Second, dry off. Third, cover in butter (this is only if you want to eat the the "skin"). Fourth, wrap in tin foil. Fifth, place in the oven at temperature 350 for about 1 and 1/2 hours.
Make sure you're careful when taking to potato out of the oven, it might be hot!
