This is how I make my green beans. Fry about 1/2 pound of cut up bacon until almost crisp. Add one large onion and cook until translucent. Add 2 cans of drained green beans and heat thoroughly.

I'm not sure about the onion, but I make my green beans like this. I use fresh green beans (canned beans just don't taste as good!). Snap the ends off and rinse them real good. To the pot of beans, I add about a pound of raw bacon to them and boil them together. Add salt. After the beans and bacon come to a full boil, turn the heat down until they are just barely boiling. Cook until the beans are tender to taste and the bacon is fully cooked. This has such a wonderful taste. I suppose you could add the cut up onion to them while they are boiling. Enjoy!

I'm not famililar with the particular recipe you're talking about but here's two great recipes:
1. Green Bean Casserole: Drain the water off of two cans of french cut green beans. Place in oblong casserole dish. Add and mix in a can of cream of mushroom soup. Top with a can of Durkee's french fried onion rings. Bake about 30 minutes covered with aluminum foil at 350. Uncover and continue baking for ten minutes to brown the top. You can also use fresh or frozen green beans, your own french fried onion rings and add cooked bacon.
2. Green Beans Italian Style: Cook fresh or frozen green beans to the level of tenderness you like. Drain off water. Add butter, grated parmesean cheese, flavored bread crumbs and garlic power to taste. Very simple and very delicious.

The best way to cook pretty much any veggie to keep in nutirents and keep a semi-crisp texture is to steam them. Do you have a steamer basket? If you dont that's okay. Try this.... put a small amount of water (1") in a saucepan that will be big enough for all of your green beans. Then bring that to a boil real quick and reduce the heat to med-low. You can either set your steamer basket in now if you have one or just put your beans in and cover with a lid. Now just let them steam for about 10 minutes. That's it! Super basic and yummy.

If they were from school you probably had canned beans. They are fully cooked and salted. Your lunch ladies probably cooked bacon and then satued onions in the grease. Depending on your grease tolerance, drain what you want and mix the rest together. Sugar should be added and a bit of vinegar if you had really good lunch ladies. Enjoy.

We never ate them whole, but "snapped" (we called them snap-beans)...the bacon and onions aren't garnishes, they need to be cooked with the beans to add flavor...if you put 'em in last, as garnishes, they don't do anything for the taste of the beans...
