"Convicted ex-border agents may not get hearing.

"We'll be done in Congress the week of the 11th. We're running out of time," said Alan Knapp, the deputy chief of staff and legislative director for U.S. Rep. Ted Poe, R-Texas.

Poe expected to deliver by today a letter to U.S. Rep. James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, asking for the hearing to be promptly scheduled, Knapp said.

Sensenbrenner had given his blessing for a congressional investigation into the prosecution of agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean during a public hearing on immigration in El Paso in August. This week, his office directed questions to a spokesman who did not return phone calls.

situation is sorely disappointing to family members who had put a lot of hope in the promised hearing, especially after Ramos was sentenced in October to 11 years in prison and Compean to 12 years in prison for violation of civil rights and tampering with evidence.

Ramos and Compean shot at Osvaldo Aldrete Davila during a chase Feb. 17, 2005, near Fabens as he was running toward Mexico after abandoning a van filled with marijuana. One bullet hit Aldrete in the buttocks. The agents said they thought Aldrete had a gun. Aldrete testified that he did not. The agents did not report the shooting to their superiors, and Compean picked up shell casings, court testimony showed.

Congressman Poe's staffers said they expected to get their letter to Sensenbrenner signed by other legislators, including U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., and U.S. Reps. Walter B. Jones, R-N.C. Officials in Jones' office said this week that they didn't know whether their congressman would participate in a letter to Sensenbrenner."

It's in the quiet times when the focus is off that you see who can be trusted to do what they say.

What do you think of all of this?

Hey squirls....

I think it is interesting that reps who were quite gung ho before the election now don't return calls...

There is more than one reason to be interested.

And they are too stupid to see the can of worms they have just opened? Now are other boarder patrol agents going to be afraid to do their job for fear of being sent to prison? I also wonder why we have boarder patrol at all, since I clearly remember in the original article when this whole thing started, that boarder patrol was not suppose to be chasing those that illegally cross the border. What exactly are they suppose to be doing down there? Watching people cross and wave them on?

I don't like what happened to them, but...

Why did they not report the shooting?
Why did they clean up the scene of the shooting?
The dirtbag drug smuggler was running away. The only information about whether the dirtbag drug smuggler had a gun or not came from the Border Patrol Agent AFTER he was charged with violating the dirtbag drug smuggler's Constitutional Rights.

In all my years I learned that there are always at least 2 sides to a story.

How would you feel if the one that was shot was your relative?

Remember the shooting of the 92 year old drug dealing woman who opened fire on the police first? People were all up in arms about this LEGAL shooting.

If I was in the same situation as one of the two agents, I too would have probably shot the dirtbag drug smuggler (if I thought he had a weapon and posed a threat), but I would have REPORTED it and followed procedures.

If they had done this, then the situation would be extremely different.

as a results of threat from different inmates. no longer purely of the form wishfully dreamed up by the guy some posts up. it quite is for their risk-free practices. What Bush desires to do is pardon them. they do no longer could be rehired by the Border Patrol, that's sufficient punishment for falsifying a checklist, for my area. inspite of the undeniable fact that, inspite of how he feels approximately those adult males the President has to comprehend it quite is impacting morale on the border patrol.

From my understanding they didn't know the guy was hit and didn't report it because of that. Wasn't one of the border patrol agents shot? Maybe just injured in some way.....I'm not sure. They are my heroes and I think what's being done to them is a disgrace. I agree.....pound them with e-mails, letters and calls and demand these guys get a hearing. Personally I think they deserve a medal.

Even if they tried to cover it up,the word of a drug smuggler should not be taken. If they were dirty cops on the take for drugs or money,I could see it. If they are send to prison that is going to demoralize a lot of agents. They are already having a hard time hiring Border agents. It is going to be a big stupid mistake.

During the time waiting for trial. I read an article where the drug smuggler had been arrested for drugs and the charges were dropped.

I don't know all of the facts. However, with what is presented I would tend to side with the officers. Civil Rights? Drug dealers should not be entitled to civil rights. The officers should be awarded The Silver Starr. If they had killed the dealer, which they should have, the award would be the Medal of Honor.

I think its pretty sad that those guys were trying to do there job and are facing jail for it,if Osvaldo had shot them nothing would have been done, and I can only wonder who got the drugs?Maybe Sensenbrenner wanted them to sell himself, but thats just my opinion.

load must have been headed for DC sure it wasn't crack seems the way they think there quite a few must be smoking as for the BP agents I am sure they were told time and again don't go for the brain case the only thing that concerns me is why they tried to cover up and why the civil rights talk was the guy a US cit. ?

Those guys should have reported it yes. But they should be given medals and a raise, not a jail sentence. We need more men on the border like them. They are heroes, not criminals.
