There is a good possibility that your grandmas dog has kidney stones. We had a dog that had 20 kidney stones that she could not pass and they had to do surgery to remove them. Good luck finding the culpret!!

There are a lot of causes for blood in the urine. If it's a female and she's not spayed, it could be that she's in heat or that she's developed an infection in her reproductive organs (called a pyometra). Males, obviously, don't have a uterus, but if they're not neutered, their prostate gland can become enlarged and cause difficulty urinating and cause there to be blood in the urine. These, however, are not the most common causes.
Most often, dogs develop urinary tract infections, just like people. It usually manifests in frequent urination, foul smelling and discolored urine - sometimes their appetite drops off and they become lethargic. Sometimes dogs can develop bladder or kidney stones that cause irritation and bleeding.
Any of these causes requires medical attention, and just like if we were sick, the longer we wait, the bigger our problems can become. When our dogs don't feel good, they can avoid food and water (just like us) and this can lead to bigger problems, like dehydration. Good luck with your grandma's dog - hope you can get him or her into the vet soon!

Because the dog is ill. It needs a vet. It could be a UTI, liver, kidneys, prostate if male... Are you sure it is urinating blood or is it a female in heat? YOU MUST GO TO VET!

The only person who can tell you for sure is the Vet. Don't wait to call because that could endanger your dog.
