Your first instinct was correct to respond with "I think you better ask him." Or sometimes Dear Abby used to tell people to respond to personal questions by saying: "I'll forgive you for asking if you forgive me for not answering."

I think that's a very good answer "you should ask him". It put them in the position of knowing they shouldn't be asking the question or facing the person they're asking questions about.

I think saying "You should ask him" or "I prefer not to answer personal questions for other people" would both get the point across quite nicely. You could even say "That's not my concern and I don't think it should be yours either."

I always say...
"You know, that's a pretty personal matter, maybe you should ask them directly." People usually get the hint at this point that they are barking up the wrong tree.

My usual reply is "I'm too busy sorting out my problems. When I'm perfect, I'll start worrying about other people." If the person you are talking to has half a brain, they will get the message.

you can always plead the 5th. i would most likely shrug it off like that. or just simply say i don't know. if they continue to press on you just tell them I'm not saying anything, if you want to know ask [that person].

That's a good answer. What I always respond is, "You know, her/his story is not mine to tell. If (so-and-so) needs you to know, I'm sure she/he will tell you in their own time." The other good side to this is that people will respect you and trust you more when they know you're not a gossip.

Ask them why they want to know. This usually works.
