Yes I think they do care. Dogs, like many other mammals, including humans, are biologically programmed to care for their young until they are independent.

A b**ch will gradually stop giving her pups milk but if left to her own devices will start to wean the pups herself by regurgitating food.

In the wild she would then go on to provide food for her pups and then teach them to hunt and fend for themselves before driving them away.

When we remove the pups at 6 to 8 weeks the b**ch is completely aware that they are unable to fend for themselves and will become agitated.

A half wit, low life dumped some three week old pups near where I live and the mother found them and cared for them, eventually attempting to bring them home one by one in her mouth.

Fortunately she was found and all the them were rescued and re-homed.

'Low Life' was banned for one year and then had another dog tied up in his back garden.

Sorry I digress. The answer is 'yes' but as owners we interfere so much with the pups and take over so many of the maternal duties that a lot of b**ches just sit back and let us get on with it.

All animals exhibit distress when you remove their offspring whether they are dogs, cats horses, cattle etc.

P.S. Humans are also 'programmed to boot offspring out' when they are old enough' . This is usually that time when the parents and their older teenagers hardly ever communicate and when they leave for university or to live elsewhere there is a huge sigh of relief all round . The parents still care but at a distance!

If they are all given away at one time she may be a little upset, but if they given away over the course of a few days she should handle fine. But too many people give the puppies away too early 6 weeks is on the young side the puppy would still do well on its mothers milk for 8 to 10 weeks. And not only that they have more chance to learn good dog behaviour from the mother since starting at 6 weeks they will realy start learning to socialize and play, Mama dog will teach the puppies lots of things (=.

Actually yes they do mind, if you look at the dog the dog will show you this in the form of depression much like a Human after all we would'nt willingly give our kids would we? I would say if this is the case then you should consult your vet or try a homeopathic Medicine such as skullcap & vallarium.

i say that dogs care when you give away there offspring because the mother i got my dog from when her owner gave the puppies away she would stair out the window for weeks on end waiting for them to return. Also the other female in the house does the same. and when i take my dog back to visit she remember instantly and they lick eachother like no tomorrow

No. What should people do, keep entire litters????? Most bit ches lose interest in the puppies as they get older. I have a 7 months old boy and his mom think he was birthed by some other bit ch. She treats him like any other dog we have. There is NO motherly attachment to him at all. That is the way nature intended it. They have to move on!!

No once the pups are weaned the female will go back into heat and look to breed again.
Most siblings will fight with each other and mothers will fight with sons and daughters once they get older.
In nature the animals will run off the weaned babies so they can breed on their own.

Torbaynewfs is right. After a while the mother looses any motherly attachment at all.

They probably don't. Just don't give them away before they are 6 weeks old. So they are not deprived, and they need to finish feeding with there mom. but I am not truely sure if they care other than that.

I imagine that they do mind. So, please do all of us and the poor dog a favor and get it spayed or neutered. There are entirely to many domestic animals that are homeless and die for that reason.

I'm sure the mother often wonders where all her children went, but on the other hand I'm sure she doesn't worry too much about them, and doesn't really mind that they are not there.
