I agree I think its bad manners but now a days I don't think that ppl care too much about that. As to the other posts that were saying how can you yawnn with your mouth open I really don't think that was the question. I think we all know you can't yawn with your mouth close but it's a matter of covering your mouth when you do. I do think that coughing without covering your mouth is rude and extremely unhealthy. Spreading germs with all of the germs that are out here (old/new and un-heard of) is just gross.
I also think that talking on your cell phone (while being checked out at a grocery store, the mall or where ever) is also rude. Its equivalent to ignoring the person that's servicing you. Its almost like manners are a thing of the past.
OM!! Someone said something about wearing hats inside...what about wearing sunglasses inside??? Man, when you really think about the list could go on and on!!
Sad...

I haven't hurt my neck, but sometimes my jaw pops and hurts as with others. And, er, to get into the second line of discussion: UK music rocks like no other!

Couldn't agree more, Jay. For some on here to say you have to open your mouth to yawn, is just showing their ignorance! They are the ones who sneeze and cough without attempting to use a handkerchief or cover their nose/mouth. Bad manners seems rife these days - whatever age they are. Was a time if someone accidentally stepped on your foot/toe they would apologise, now they look at you as if it is your fault for standing there!

Jay I agree with you on manners it is wrong for people to eat, chew, yawn, and cough with their mouths open and uncovered.
The covering of the mouth was to keep others from being exposed to bad breath and the sight of rotten teeth. Mostly Bad teeth and gums. As orientals still cover their mouths during laughing. Maybe its that people feel that they have good oral hygiene and don't care if others see.

I don't think so. Yawning and coughing are two different things. Coughing spreads germs, yawning is just opening your mouth, the same as if you were talking or laughing. Making big exaggerated yawning sounds is rude, but simply opening your mouth while yawning, which is pretty hard to control, is not rude or disrespectful to do in public.

yes they should cover there mouth with there hand like you should do when you cough or sneeze but do tend to think that manners have become a thing of the past. it annoys me when people wear hats inside and especially when they are eating.

in Islam, a muslim must cover his mouth with his hand while yawning... cuz it's a bad manner.. & the prophet Muhammad PBUH used to do this & says that Allah "God" hates yawnning.
u know it looks funny when someone stands a yawn & let u see untill his stomech also this makes ppl around him feel sleepy.
watch any muslim yawnning. you'll probably find him putting his hands on his mouth to cover it.

I agree - it's appalling. A general deterioration of manners, respect and consideration for others. But there's no point in getting upset about it unless you can figure a way to change all those attitudes.

yawning in its self isnt a sign of bad manners, its the act of not covering your mouth when you do yawn that is. i know we all open our mouths when we yawn but even so its just a sign of having good manners to cover it when you do yawn isnt it? ok so there isnt the same risk of spreading germs and disease as when you cough or sneeze but you wouldnt think twice abut covering your mouth when you do either of these...would you? with coughing and sneezing its a combination of politeness and hygene for notwanting to spread germs, with yawning its just a case of being polite.

You are so right, this maybe that is why the spread of diseases is more common these days than they have been for a century!
Birds flu etc!
My four kids do it, even my 2yr old covers her mouth when coughing, yawning etc!
